With reference to the pyramids, here's an excerpt from one of my papers...

Jehovah’s Witnesses today might be surprised at some of the auxiliary lines of evidence Russell used to “prove” that 1914 was going to bring about these sweeping, worldwide changes.

[Watchtower, May 1, 1903, p. 130-131; p3184 Reprints]
"When Uranus and Jupiter meet in the humane sign of Aquarius in 1914, the long-promised era will have made a fair start in the work of setting man free to work out his own salvation, and will insure the ultimate realization of dreams and ideals of all poets and sages in history."

[The Divine Plan of the Ages, 1905, end notes]
“THINGS YOU OUGHT TO KNOW AS CHRISTIAN BIBLE STUDENTS
DO YOU KNOW THAT…
— The Great Pyramid in Egypt is a Witness to all these events of the ages and of our day—testifying in symbols?
— The Pyramid's downward passage under "A Draconis" symbolizes the course of Sin? Its First Ascending Passage symbolizes the Jewish age? Its grand Gallery symbolized the Gospel age? Its Upper Step symbolized the approaching period of tribulation and anarchy, "Judgments," upon Christendom? Its King's Chamber the Divine Nature, etc., of the Overcoming Church — the Christ, Head and Body? Its Ante-Chamber the Correction in Righteousness of the "Great Company" etc.? Its Queen's Chamber those of Israel and the world who attain Restitution?”

[Russell, Studies in the Scriptures: Thy Kingdom Come, Series III, p. 342, 1897 edition]
"...this measurement is 3416 inches, symbolizing 3416 years.... This calculation shows A.D. 1874 as marking the beginning of the period of trouble...."

Later in the 1916 edition of this same publication, the text was changed to read…
"We find it to be 3457 inches, symbolizing 3457 years.... Thus the Pyramid witnesses that the close of 1914 will be the beginning of the time of trouble...."

The above measurement was the length of an interior passageway discovered inside the Pyramids. It has no reference in Scripture, but it’s interesting how this measurement suddenly and miraculously changed by 41 inches after previous prophecies went unfulfilled, just in time for this new interpretation given them by Jehovah.

it's always interested me, mainly because we couldnt celebrate xmas or anything because of " pagan roots" and damned if the watchtower society itself didnt have pagan roots!!

Here is some info you might find interesting.

The reason Russell wrote about the Great Pyramid was to use the Pyramid to catch the attention of people who normally would not be interested in his books.

Russell even published a special edition of Volume one of the Studies in the Scriptures that included the Pyramid Chapter!!! (The Pyramid chapter was originally published as Chapter 10 in volume 3 of the SIS.)

This leads one to think that the Pyramid was all along being used simply as a marketing tool by Russell.

Russell developed his chronology prior to writing about the Great Pyramid. What he did was to use "Fuzzy Methods" to fit the Pyramid into his chronology. Russell and those around him knew the pyramid "measurments" used were dubious accuracy, and so he tried to obtain an endorsement of his pyramid chapter by sending it before publication to pyramid researcher Smyth, who wrote nice things about the book in reply. Russell then included Smyth's praise in the published version of the pyramid chapter.

Russell admitted in the Watch Tower that the numbers he used in the 1890 edition were "paper values" obtained from measuring a so-called scale drawing of the Great Pyramid that was published in Smyth's book, Our Inheritance in the Great Pyramid , and were found to be inaccurate.

So much for Smyth's original "endorsement" of Russell's pyramid chapter!

Russell never did say where he obtained the new values for the Pyramid that he used in all editions of "Thy Kingdom Come" published after 1905.

It all comes down to this, Russell used the Pyramid in order to generate interest in his own books. He did not care about accuracy or documenting precisely his methods. He just wanted to latch onto the pyramid fad that was in vogue in order to hook people into reading his other books.

I'd agree with VM44 that Russell was using the pyramid as an auxiliary support for his chronology. But I'm not sure I would conclude that it was just silly marketing that he didn't really believe in to begin with. It might be hard for us to come up with anything conclusive on that.
