I am planning on seeing this one this weekend, now that my last term paper is completed.

Well, I was finally able to see this movie over the weekend, and what a grand movie it was. It is not an action movie, and if it had been released later in the year it would be a contender for some Academy Awards. Albert Finney, as John Newton, was excellent. However, Ioan Gruffudd, who portrays William Wilburforce absolutely commanded your attention. He has a presense that fills the screen, and you feel his struggles, defeats and triumphs. The movie is strictly dialoge driven, however, it never dragged once. All the characters were interesting, though I had some confusion over certain characters, particularly Lord Fox, and how he came to be involved in Wilburforce's cause. I have to attribute that confusion to my own lack of knowledge about the British Abolitionist movement.
I highly recommend this movie! on a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 4.5.

From what I hear of the plot, it has a strong theme against JW-like "neutrality", when you are clearly capable of taking a stand for what is right.

Ah, yes, the neutrality myth. There is a very poignant scene in the movie, in which Wilburforce seeks out Newton's advice on whether or not he should pursue politics or take on the cloth. Newton asks Wilburforce why he can't do both. One does not have to be a preacher in order to do the work of God.
