I have a disagreement with an individual on whether or not there is any mention of banners and flags in the bible. I have found one example and that was at Ps. 20:5; if anyone else has anymore examples or ideas, that would help greatly. tks in advance

Sorry I can't find the example you are thinking of, have you tried Blue letter Bible or one of those and do a search with the word banner?

On the topic of banners/flags, I mentioned to my jw that they had their own types of flags or banners, his response was that they were approved by jah and our national flags today are not. Good grief.

The NWT on the Watchtower's own website is not searchable — God's sole channel to mankind cannot seem to manage it. Pity.

Perhaps someone here can search the NWT on the Library CD? Flag, banner, standard, ensign, emblem.

My hard-copy NWT omits "standard" from the book of Numbers ENTIRELY! Rewords all the passages to get around it. Psalms uses "sign" and "signal," Isaiah and Jeremiah "signal."

"Insight on the Scriptures" omits flag, banner and standard. The entry for "sign" focuses on signs of the end. The entry for "signal" refers to the Hebrew word "nes" and they define it as a stationary pole or stake occupying an elevated site... I checked two Hebrew lexicons for "nes" and they came up blank.

My interest in this goes back many years... I used to work for the publisher of a newspaper, The Jewish Standard. Everyone but me (a token goy) knew the name meant a flag, not a measurement of quality. A family standard would be similar to its coat of arms. But in most cases, it means a military or national flag.

*Evidently* the spirit-directed Watchtower translators removed or changed it.

Only scripture in NWT that addresses the term "banner" as a flag:

(Psalm 20:5) We will cry out joyfully because of your salvation, And in the name of our God we shall lift our banners. May Jehovah fulfill all your requests.

It is interesting, that the WT-CD material sidesteps discussion of this term in the Bible and how to harmonize it with the WTS policy regarding flags.

Banner NWT Song of Solomon 3:4, Psalms 20:5

Insight on the Scriptures Volume 1 pg 397:

"Signs for the house of their fathers" were provided to help a person find his proper place in the camp. (Nu 2:2) Since the Hebrew expression de´ghel, rendered "three-tribe division," also means "banner" (as in Ca 2:4), it is possible that there were tribal markers as well as family ensigns. The Bible gives neither the number nor a description of these signs.

I agree with Betterdaze's posts. Yes. Flags are mentioned in the bible. Where does everybody think that flags today came from? Everything today has an origin in the past. Flags are mentioned in the bible. They may have used a different name (banner, standard) but the idea is still the same. It is a flag, pure and simple. When I found this out years ago, I just despised the JWs for obscuring the truth from everybody.

The JWs differ just for the sake of being different.
