Watchtower Publisher Records and Social Security Numbers

Around the early 1990's an announcement was made just after the "ministry school" that the Society was requesting personal information of all baptised publishers in the KH I was attending.

The attendands passed out blank "service reports" and we were told to write on the back our full name, date of birth and social security number.

I was very uncomfortable about the intrusive nature of their request. Being newly baptised, of course, I did as they asked.

Does anyone else remember a similar situation? I wonder why the Watchtower would want this information?

I have never been asked for or given my SSN to anyone in the congregations I have attended. I can see why you might have to give it to the appropriate people at Bethel if you are a Bethelite because of the IRS laws re non-profit corporation volunteers.

    PS

The Publishers Record Cards don't have a space for it.

Only name, address, phone number, other sheep or anointed, male/female, elder/MS/regular pioneer

    Plus your hours, placements, etc.

    But no SSN.

There is no legitimate reason why the elders would need the Social Security numbers of the witnesses.

Sounds very suspicious to me. The elders should have told the congregation the reason why they wanted that information.
