I hail from New Bedford, Mass. I was a newbie with the JW's in the mid 50's, quickly and naively following my parents, and when I graduated high school (New Bedford High) I moved to where the "need was great" in central Iowa.
The following is a composite photo of some of the folks that met on the second floor of an insurance building in New Bedford. I am Leonard Miller in that photo and was barely 16 when I got baptized. Dad is Wesley and Mom is Rita.
It's unlikely that any many will be recognized but just in case, there is a post that follows this one, I call it an index photo, that will provide names of the ones I can remember.
Worthy of mention for the gossip-minded: Kathy Luiz was approx. 13 at the time of this photo. Henry Weber, some 65 years old, was her fiancee at the time. Yes, they married and within a short time both professed inclusion in the "heavenly anointed" club.
Another -- Florence Soares was approx. 35 at the time and Bill Kurcharsky, 65. Bill's invalid wife died shortly after and shortly after that those two married. It wasn't long before they, too, joined the same club with Kathy and Henry.
Was there something in New Bedford's water supply or what?
You may note that we once had a "prominent" visitor from New York at the kingdom hall. You'd think we had the president of the U.S. visiting, people were tripping over others just to get near and grab a close glimpse. The hall was overflowing at both the English-speaking and the Portuguese-speaking meetings. He gave the public talk at both. We were told by the Portuguese natives that he kinda mangled the language but nobody left early despite the fact that he went grossly overtime at both talks.

I knew the Silva's in Detroit; they were DO'ing there. I heard they eventually left the "traveling work" and were enjoying the pursuit of material stuff! Does anyone know?

Sorry, Ninja, that I implied that. I had already moved when Mom told me the wedding news a few years later. She was of some legal age since her mama was not entirely in favor of the event. That would place him close to 70 if she were 18.
When we all were in a 6 car caravan to the Baltimore assy in '57, gossip from the ones behind related how they were necking in the back seat of Frank and Frances Gonsalves '49 Plymouth. I'll have to admit here and now that I was somewhat broken hearted since I had a secret crush on her at that time.
Interesting, Sunspot. We may have crossed paths in Springfield, I as a 3 year old. We were both baptized in Rhode Island as well.
Wow about Silva's, Emma. Bill was about 10 years older than I (check my avatar) and he and Veronica couldn't have children. He sold cars at a Chevy-Olds dealership in Fairhaven when they got involved. Veronica was always trying to fix me up with young gals around the circuit. A very charismatic couple when I knew them.

And they knew it, too. When they'd come back to the ol' congo for a visit (they were in the circuit work) they were treated like visiting royalty. I was always waiting for someone to genuflect and kiss Bishop Bill's ring.

Yes, and if you examine that photo with Bill directly behind Freddie in that kingdom hall shot, you can almost see his brain working toward that end, "Hey -- If he can do it -- maybe I have a chance, too."
Kaput knows exactly how to place things into perspective.
