Forms of divisions / Sitting Quietly. Do you fill every free moment of your day with some form of diversion? Here are some forms of diversions that I found keeps most of hectically busy. Work, computers, television, movies, radio, magazines, newspapers, sports, alcohol, drugs, parties.

For those who attend schools, universities etc. Students and professors scrutinize every possible aspect of our universe. From the billions of galaxies to subatomic particles, electrons, quarks, and many other disciplines.

Do you find it difficult to sit quietly when you have a free moment or do you keep hectically busy with some form of diversion? James Thomas's many post's has talked much about sitting quietly, how many find it hard to do and how many do it easily? I seem to find myself keeping busy with some form of diversion now that I'm unemployed, I find it difficult to just sit quietly.

I can never sit quietly. I couldn't do it at meetings or conventions. Thank goodness my children were with me to distract me.

I'm bipolar. About 90% of my brain is churning full tilt most of the time.

I enjoy sitting quietly and just thinking or enjoying my surroundings. I have no problem ignoring a knock on the door or a ringing telephone to do it.

I enjoy sitting in silence and staring at the walls or out a window. In nice weather, I sit outside, watching and listening to the birds. I'm glad I have the ability to do so, it calms my mind and probably keeps my blood pressure normal.

I can sit quietly in that I don't need external diversions constantly. What I find my greatest distraction is my own mind and its constant churnings. I have recently taken to meditating, attempting to focus on my breath, but it's a hard thing for me to quiet my mind. The rat on the wheel refuses to stop.

Being in nature definitely helps. But I live in the concrete jungle and it's been a long winter. 8 hours til Spring. Wahoo!!!

Its easy where I live to just sit outside and vegetate. I live in a remote quiet canyon and on a beautiful day one can just sit back and watch the birds swoop in to the feeder or a little goat run next door or a lizard do push-ups on a stone. Often I find myself outside sitting quietly blending in with the peace of the natural elements.
The air is so sweet with the scent of first blooming wild plum trees. Doves coo from the trees.
Mountain song birds, wrens and jays create a symphony of sound all around. Wild turkeys gobble by the creek.
The cat jumps onto my lap and wants a brushing. I give it to him and he starts to drool and fall asleep. A dragon fly pauses to say hello and move on. Ah, an afternoon I wish would last forever!

At these times I know I am lengthening my life by sitting here in this quiet repose. I feel it deep down inside like a magic elixir. I feel very good.

I am always doing something or else I am sleeping. Sitting quietly sounds like a precursor to meditation, which I have done in the past but dont do today. If your life is hectic and your blood pressure is high and you are full of questions. Sitting quietly and meditating might be for you.

I take numerous breaks outside sitting quietly. I have a back yard that is dominated by an 80 year old oak with 15 foot bamboo surrounding the rest. There is no grass, We had a wood deck built 2 years ago to the very limits of the backyard. It is filled with potted ferns, orchids, various flowering vines, and in the center is our pool.

Does it allow me to relax, yes, when the pool is in order, but I am usually struggling with leaves, some kind of growth, pool pump problems, filter, chlorine etc., etc., etc. over the winter months. I am just now getting to the point where it will be wonderful for next 6 months.

When all is under control, I will send a picture.

I can't function without this kind of time. I get centered, grounded, cleansed, refreshed.

If for some reason I have not had down time for a long time, it usually means a trip to the riverfront, sitting on a bench, staring into the water......feeling the sun, looking at the trees move and sway. I feel very lazy, like I can't get up.......and fineally I when i get the energy, thats when I can leave.

    Sometimes its a long visit.
