I know a hardworking father who wanted to keep his intelligent daughter away from obsessing about boys and empty headed fashion.

So, he started an on line brokerage account in her name and funded it with $3000. He told her to study the stock market and that she could

keep any money she makes. Result? His daughter follows the Dow Jones Index instead of reading her horoscope and gets upset on days

when the market goes down. After a while she made money too - that was at age 16 and now she's finishing college.

A little pricey but not a bad idea

Well, the Dow sure beats MTV. Or should that be, when you say it many times over and over, Empty-Tv? The kids who watch that all day look pretty empty to me

Great idea, pricey in the beginning but there are plenty of parents who spend more time and money in the long run by not showing any interest

    up front.

I have never obsessed over a boy...

    Girls however...

But I could totally handle the stock market AND girls. I've got multitasking skills like that. And I could make money at it, too.

my sister and her husband did a similar thing with my nephew when he was about 13 years old. They bought him an old Ford pickup and told him when it worked he could drive it. So he spent his time working on the truck, learning how to do car repair, working part time for money for parts. He never got in trouble, and when he was old enough to drive he had this fabulous restored cherry red Ford pickup of which he was very proud.

all I ever got was encouragement to get a job, decent training in marksmanship and woodland survival, a good work ethic, and then I got put out on my ass...

    whatever works, eh?
