    I moved SW Michigan where there are two or three Christian Reformed Churches on every street. I looked into it because it was freaking me out to see so many. They have similar beliefs to Presbyterians. The believe in pre-destination. I have been to one service and they do recite the Nicene Creed. There are varying levels of strictness in the different forms of Calvinism.

    The Calvinists (followers of Calvin) believed in predestination. The "elect" were those who were predestined (elected) to be with Christ in contrast to all the others who were damned. Calvin had a great influence upon John Knox who spread the Calvinistic theology to Scotland, the center of Presbyterian faith.

    The Puritans, on the other hand, were those who desired to reform ("to purify") the Anglican church. The pilgrims who came to this country were divided into "separatists" who broke from the church and "puritans" who wanted to reform the church.

    Hi Terry: Even though I went to a Christian Reformed Church for about 13 years I don't know too much about John Calvin. After my "incident" I had a difficult time reading up on anything relating to John Calvin and Election, probably much like how some x-Witnesses feel about reading anything relating to the Org. I know that he was French, but the Dutch seemed to embrace his views. CRC are mostly of Dutch descent, but it is gradually changing. Here's a website that may help you. I really don't know anything about the Puritans.

    I've commenced some deep reading about the Puritans and Calvinists because of a conversation I had with a customer at the bookstore who is a collector of authentic Puritan original documents.

    He is a fascinating guy. He is also an Inerrantist!

    Believing in predestination and being an Inerrantist makes him pretty special in my book.

    I want to get saturated in the true facts of history before I ask him anything more.

    Calvinist;

    At the time Jesus was talking to the Jews, the Jews were the only people on earth that had a relationship with God.

    It was only later that Paul was sent to preach to the Gentiles.

    But yet in John 10:16 And I have other sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my vioce. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

    So before Paul took the Gospel to the Gentiles, Jesus referred to them as "sheep". Not goats that would turn into sheep, but sheep.

    In Romans 9 talking about Rebecca and her sons, Jacob and Esau, 11 before they were born and had done nothing either good or bad, ........she was told "The elder will serve the younger" as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated".

    14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means. 15 For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."

    16 So it depends not upon man's will or exertion, but upon God's mercy.

    Romans 8:29-30 For those whom he [God] foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.

    I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

    No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him. John 6:44

    Peace
