Before removing Vista I suggest going to the web site of the laptop's manufacturer and locating all the necessary XP drivers for your machine - at the very least get the driver for your network adaptor. Burn them to a CD. If you don't have reinstallation CDs for your laptop, you might consider making an image of your machine as it is now, in case you choose to go back to Vista in the future. Normally I use Norton Ghost for images, but I haven't tried it with Vista yet, and don't know if it'll work.

I agree with looking for the drivers before you install XP. Make sure the drivers exist, download them, and burn them onto a CD. They will always come in useful.
You should be able to scrub Vista booting off the WinXP CD. If you want to make sure it's completely gone, download a program called Gparted. Make sure you download the LiveCD (.iso disk image) and burn it. Nero can burn .iso images. You can boot off this CD and completely wipe any data and hidden partitions off your drive. If you re-format your drive, make sure you use the NTFS file system.
You can get Gparted here for free:

I scrubbed Vista off my system as well, and later discovered a hidden partition with the Vista installation on it. It is now gone

You have my deepest sympathies.
OTOH, you know, if you'd just go back to the Kingdom Hall, they'd be happy to do all the programming for you.
