Yup!
I went to a party that a friend in my department was throwing for her non-atmospheric-geo-bio-grad-student-friends to explain the science behind global warming (ok- it sounds like a dorky idea but was fun -lots of "molten" fondue food and BBQ polar-bear-swim in the pool and folks got to do drawings for gifts etc...) BTW- the topic of the party is beside the point- NO discussing GW in this thread (PM me if you want...)!
And turns OUT she is Mormon and her non-sci friends were all her Mormon buddies from church...
Anyhoo, what I wanted to say, is that the dynamic at the party was really similar to the dynamic at the dub parties that I used to go to. Plus, no booze for the Mormons.
One of the GW blurbs that was read at the party talked about the destruction of the dinos about 65 million years ago etc and it made me think..... do the Mormons believe in evolution and an "old earth" or are they "young earthers"?
Well, I asked my friend and some others there and as you could well imagine they were more than happy to discuss their beliefs and were overjoyed when I told them that I used to be a dub. "Oh! I've had GREAT conversations with the Witnesses"...
Turns out that the Mormon church has no official position on evolution. I asked what they taught at BYU. I guess that they teach biology according to the single unifying theory of biology- evolution- which I found to be refreshing and quite progressive, compared to the dubs.
I guess, that BYU IS a nationally accredited university -so it has to teach evolution as a fact, correct? Also, one guy said that some of the biology profs DID believe in creation personally, but they did teach evolution. He was a little wishy-washy in his explanation, so perhaps there is more of a creationist bias than they let on...
Also, my friend said she didn't really want to invite the whole department, as they might not be too hip on the whole Mormon party scene, but sent out an invite at the last minute. I told her -I know what you mean, when I was a JW I didn't usually invite my non-JW friends to my JW shindigs... -We had a little laugh over that. ...but she seems to be a pretty true blue Mormon.
-Well, just wanted to share my groovy experience at a rockin Mormon party...!

Well, when I went to junior and high school (long, long time ago) in Utah, they taught evolution.

The LDS faith is more about FAITH and isn't really about trying to justify their beliefs. Most ones that I have met and know(and some very very intelligent ones, btw) don't spend time playing the game of "proving creation vs. evolution" as some other christians I have met do. Science not coinciding with faith statements don't seem to pose much of a quandry. I have heard it expressed that most religion flies in the face of known reality. So does the LDS church. Really no more or less than any other faith based religion with God fathering/becoming man, talking animals, plagues, angels, heavenly plotting and mutiny, talking vegetation, miracles, resurrection, magic etc. If a Christian can believe in a God who makes the demands that the OT Yahweh did, then why piddle about the length of creative days?

To non-Americans such as myself, Mormons are just like JWs except they dress better. All the rest is irrelevant detail: Same accents, same loud, know-it-all, smarmy spiel, same we'll-show-the-world-what-the-truth-is....

What!
I thought I was quite a stylish dub...
I think the JWs dress better- From what I have seen of Mormons they favor the sackish, "Little House on the Prairie" housedresses for the womenfolk... and the guys- well, I've only seen the black pants/white shirt with nametag ensemble...
The dubs don't look that great but I think they make a better try for a "stylish" look...
Also, are the JWs and Mormons really a mainly-American phenomenon?
