If it's an optical wireless keyboard, you may need to put the transmitter in a different location. I get the same problem if the transmitter and keyboard aren't in the same plane, or there's something blocking the signal - even an inch of plywood.

Thanks Scully but it is just the keyboard that is a part of the lap top.

You've got the NumLock key activated, which turns part of the keyboard in to a number pad. Check the lights on the top of the keyboard to see what feature is turned on. There should be a button near the top of your keyboard marked NumLock. When this happens to me, it usually takes about five tries to figure out which combination turns the number lock back off. It might be NumLock, Shift-NumLock, Ctrl-NumLock, or Alt-NumLock. I know it works when the light turns off on the top of the keyboard.

I had that happen to me - the number lock key was pressed by my cat as she walked across the keyboard. Unfortunately at the same time I got a virus and never could get the keyboard fixed even after the virus was removed. Took the laptop to various technogeeks, still couldn't get it fixed, so finally had to buy a new computer. It's not like a desktop where you just replace the keyboard. I really hope you get yours straightened out.

Do you have a "num lock" key that is activated on your keyboard?

On a laptop there often are small numbers on the keys M=0, J=1, K=2, L=3, U=4, I=5, O=6 and so on.
When the num lock key is not active, you type the numbers on these keys by holding down the fn key. (As a replacement for the number keys to the right on a big standard keyboard.)

If the num lock is active on my laptop (Mac PowerBook), I'm only able to type the numbers on these keys. The other keys on the board are "locked".
But it you've got a PC, I guess the num lock key may lock only the number keys to the numbers.
