Did it seem like most of the lit. was always defending a JW belief?

Even as a kid I couldn't shake the feeling that the literature taught in negatives--- instead of advocating for a position, it seemed to be defending it and attacking

an opposing position. It seemed like they always had to beat up on something or someone to make their point.

Yes, the contrarian nature of the org pretty much started with Rutherford, and has continued since. A religion of non-beliefs.

Absolutely. They can twist anything around to their advantage using a scripture or misquote some worldly publication that will validate their doctrines. They always pick a subject that is of public interest and direct it back to themselves and how scripturally correct they are.

That part always made me feel embarassed as a JW preaching from door to door...

I always felt that outsiders would see it that way too.

    As Gary Buss once wrote:

"The Witness group is not a believing group, they are a disbelief
group. They are a counter believing group. To have a belief, Witnesses
first need another group to have a belief so they can dis-believe the
    other group's belief."
