The Situation: A friend of mine was DF'ed recently. I live with my mom, who is still active.

My mom told me that this friend couldn't come around anymore now.. I said that I had already figured that out, because she would be DFed if she kept contact with him, so she could do nothing else but follow the rules of the borg.

She responded that this was not so, that this was her personal choice ('out of love') :S

Just to be sure.. we all know this is crap, right? Examples, quotes, please!

    Regards,

I think it varies as to where you are and the attitude of the local elders. Although there is suppose to be unity, in the real world there are elders that are super strict, and others super liberal. Whether your Mom would be disfellowshipped depends on the local body and how strict they are. seek2find

Ask her, if it is so loving, would Jesus do it?

    Would Jesus endorse disfellowshipping???

No, he was the one who said, ''Whoever of you is not guilty of sin, cast the first stone''

Ask her how disfellowshipping is loving?

It makes the disfellowshipped one feel UNLOVED, not loved.

Tell her to use her heart and her own BRAIN for a change instead of the WT's thinking.

You forget Eclipse that the scripture you quote is downplayed by the WTBS.
    Namely, John 8:1-11
If you look in the New World Translation, they put it at the bottom of the page with the citation that some manuscripts omit these scriptures.
Therefore, most JW will not put too much weight in them.

Ask your mom to give examples of 'personal decisions' on her part that have lead to a course of action other than what the elders were dictating.

If she can point to any, than maybe she's right, but still an uptight religious bigot, if she can't then you know it's because she's a WTS drone.

Causal issues aside, you still have to determine where YOU stand, what your stand permits or requires in the way of contact with/support for your friend, what cost that is likely to entail, and if you are willing to pay the price of your moral integrity.

It matters little why your Mom takes the stand she does, what matters is doing the right thing by your friend without unnecessarily direspecting your mom's home.

Just look inside, you'll know what to do.

Oh yeah, personal decisions. JWs make personal decisions all the time. They make personal decisions not to smoke, personal decisions not to take blood transfusions, personal decisions not to talk to disfellowshipped people, personal decisions not to celebrate birthdays, personal decisions to preach door-to-door and turn in their hours, personal decisions to wear a suit to their meetings...

Funny how they all seem to make the same personal decisions, isn't it?

Humanoids can get away with all kinds of things by verbage. Saying things certain ways you can get away with murder. A police officer in Amerika can get away with shooting just about anybody by saying, I was in fear for my life.

What I am saying is your mother is trying to butter her conscience by saying she is showing love. Which is the exact opposite of what she is doing. But when she Bs's herself that way she can sleep at night.
