Also, when did they first come up with the idea that Satan was thrown down to earth in 1914?
when did JWs first say that Christ began ruling in heaven in 1914?

ALL of this was said in 1930, when the WBaTS did a major overhaul and became the Jehovah's Witnesses.

There was brief mention about Jesus rulership starting in 1914 in the 1930s. However it was not officially changed until 1943.
God’s Kingdom on a Thousand Years Has Approached p 209 shows “In the year 1943 the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society published the book “The Truth Shall Make You Free.” …This moved forward the end of six thousand years of man’s existence into the decade of the 1970’s. Naturally this did away with the year 1874 C.E. as the date of return of the Lord Jesus Christ and the beginning of his invisible presence or parousia. …Page 324 of the above book positively says: “The King’s presence or parousia began in 1914.””

Well, there we have it. It is because they said so. That is why his "invisible presence" began in 1914. Of course, this was obviously Rutherford's change from the "truth" that Russell came up with, that of the invisible presence in the year 1874.
Note that they are "positive." That is until new light comes.

As you can see from the replies, there are several ways your question can be interpreted. Here's a brief outline of major doctrinal changes made by the JW's on this subject:
In the year 1920, the crowning of Jesus as King of God's kingdom was moved forward from 1878 to 1914 (cf. The Watch Tower July 1, 1920 p. 196)
In the year 1922, the concept of an invisible "Heavenly establishment" of God's kingdom in 1914 was introduced. (cf. The Watch Tower November 1, 1922 pp. 332-337)
In the year 1925, it was declared that God's kingdom had been "Born" in 1914. The birth scene in Revelation 12 was applied to this event. (cf. Birth of a Nation, The Watch Tower March 1, 1925)
In the year 1927, the "First resurrection" was moved forward from 1878 to 1914 (cf. Light, Vol I p.226)
During the years 1929 to 1933, the commencement of Christ's Parousia was moved forward from 1874 to 1914. All publications after 1933 dated this event to 1914
In the years 1943-44, the significance of 1874 was discarded entirely. The 6000 year anniversary of Adam's creation was moved forward to the mid-70's This was done in two stages. (cf. The Truth Shall Make You Free p. 239; The Kingdom Is At Hand p. 171, 175)
