    FATHERS DAY HISTORY

    Fathers Day History

    Sonora Smart Dodd

The history of Father's Day goes like, in 1909 , Spokane, Washington, Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother's Day sermon. The lecture inspired her to have a special day dedicated to her father, William Jackson Smart, who had brought her up and her siblings single-handedly after their mother died. She could realize the greatness of her father and wanted to let him know how deeply she was touched by his sacrifices, courage, selflessness and love. She held the first Father's Day celebration on 19th of June 1910, on the birthday of her father. The idea soon caught on and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day on the petition sent to him by Dodd on the acceptance of fatherhood. In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City.
However, it was thirty years later that a Joint Resolution of Congress gave recognition to Father's Day. Another 16 years passed before President Richard Nixon established the third Sunday of June as a permanent national observance day of Father's Day in 1972 in the honor of all good fathers that contribute as much to the family as a mother, in their own ways. Even before Dodd came into the picture, Dr. Robert Webb of West Virginia is believed to have conducted the first Father's Day service in 1908 at the Central Church of Fairmont. However, it was the colossal efforts of Dodd, the devoted daughter of the Civil War veteran who refused to remarry for the sake of his six children and took upon himself all the duties, love and care of a mother, that eventually led it to a national observance.

    THANKS FOR THAT ,LADY LIBERTY

    Lady Liberty,

Thanks for that information. However, as you already know - a 'celebration' does not need to have 'pagan' roots to be considered evil by the JWs.

In fact, if shown this very same info - they would tell you that one is not supposed to 'honor' anyone other than the great and might Jah. (or some such rubbish)

    Regards,

    Jim TX

But we can't have that! Remember that since Charles T. Russell, we are no longer allowed to have creature worship--well, that is, except for Rutherford, Knorr, Franz, and succeeding presidents of the Society and perhaps elders.

The wedding ring is pagan - but that's OK!

JWs choose the paganism that suits them!

It does to have pagan origins. Spokane is named for a Native American tribe and we all know how pagan they are! Besides I used to live there, it may not be pagan, but it sure is hot.

I wonder if this will get quoted in next year's WT article on the pagan origins of Fathers day.

My BIL asked me yesterday why JW's didn't join in Father's Day. Mind you, my BIL hasn't been active in years. I told him:

It is a man made rule. There is absolutely nothing unscriptural about it.

He thanked me for telling him the truth. He has two little girls. I hope they don't grow up with all the nonsense he and I did.

    The WTS is evil.

1931 "On the face of it the arrangement of 'Mother's Day' seems harmless and
calculated to do good. But the people are in ignorance of Satan's subtle hand
in the matter, and that he is back of the movement, to turn the people away from
    God." ("Vindication," 1931, book 1, pp.158,159)

Rutherford got a little hard up for a way to distinguish the cult, didn't
he? If some of you kids out there don't know how to love your mother without
making it idolatry, you're going to have to stop doing it till you know how to
    do it right.

Assuming Rutherford used the reasons the recent JWs leaders have used for such
things, he didn't want JWs to give special honor to anyone but God...and him...all year long.
Is this who you really want making special rules about not honoring someone too
much--someone too lenient about the false prophet rules?
