Below are a few comments picked off the NYT forum. I have yet to see any defense of the WT position.

The Jehovah's Witnesses have always appeared so pathetic that I never really took them seriously.
My mistake of course, after all, people used to laugh at Adoph Hitler, but he sure paid them back for their insolence!

"Is that stupidity or arrogance because they think they alone speak for God?"
Accusing the Jehovah's Witnesses of being stupid, arrogant, and hypocritical, is rather like accusing a prize-winning hog at the Kansas State Fair of being fat. It is, after all, the stuff of what it is made.

Don't get me wrong. Ultimately all religions are cults. I make little distinction between the various religious lunacies, apart from condeming the most virulent first. It's just than some are newer than others. As for God weeping, I doubt it. If he exists he's probably having great fun watching the pain and suffering that afflicts our planet, from the smallest animal up to humans. After all, if he's God he could stop it, no? I'd rather have no God than that sort of God.
What do religions like Islam and Christianity have in common; they both will joyfully kill for God. How can a crew like the JWs not be considerd a cult? One JW kid dies because it is against God's law to accept an infusion of platelets, while another can live because the leaders in Brooklyn, who, incidentally, explicitly claim to be God's sole means of commuication with mankind, have decided that albumin, extracted from plasma, is A-OK. That distinction is nothing short of murder. And now these bozos are hooked up with the UN which they maintain in their literature is an evil wild beast out of the Apocalypse. Gets you thinking that maybe all religion is hogwash. It says whatever it needs to say so as to line its own pockets. Disgraceful.

only posted here cuz I thought the NYT might have some further info on what is a curious article in a British paper about two outfits in New York City who, apparently are at war, despite only being blocks from each other http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,565005,00.html
I read it on the net. Not usually that interested in religion but this thing is crazy. One of them just got the Nobel Prize while the other thinks they are some sort of disgusting red beast from Revelation, yet still backs them anyway.

I agree. There is an excellent article by Richard Dawkins http://www.guardian.co.uk/wtccrash/story/0,1300,552388,00.html.
Tragically, apparently many Jehovah's Witnesses, including children, are dying because their religion prohibits blood transfusions yet, in a very obscure, arbitrary and badly explained ruling, they now allow some blood fractions to be used medically. I'm picking this stuff up from Stephen Bates's recent articles on JWs in The Guardian (link above).
This only adds to my general opinion that religion is incredibly harmful.

HSMEW, I too have read the article you posted on the UN and the WTS. This has to be the biggest uncovering of a cult that I have ever seen. I cannot believe the trickery and deceit played out by this organization. You know, I hear that they are telling their members that the UN is making this up. can you imagine? I have noticed all of the AOL religion boards(not only JW's) are talking of nothing but this. Goodness, this is sad.

Thanks messenger, for bringing in the bacon,

My comment is on the last message. Where are the other religious boards where this subject is talked about.? Can someone post the links so we can see the comments out there? And also why does the poster say, I have noticed all of the AOL religion boards(not only JW's) are talking of nothing but this. Goodness, this is sad.

Belbab, you have to be a member of AOL to access their message boards. IMO it isn't worth the money or hassle to use AOL.I suppose if you're very zealous you could use one of their 'free hours' cds to get a taste of their little censored closed society, but ick. Just thinking about those nasty forced downloads of 'art' and 'updates' at my expense gives me the willies.
