It's not just for "The Day the Earth Stood Still" anymore!

A cover of "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley.

What's a theremin? Glad you asked!

    and here's the original:

    Lyrics:

I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place.
Even your emotions have an echo
    In so much space

    And when you're out there
    Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
    I just knew too much

    Does that make me crazy?
    Does that make me crazy?
    Does that make me crazy?
    Possibly

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that's my only advice

Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are,

Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control

    Well, I think you're crazy
    I think you're crazy
    I think you're crazy
    Just like me

My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I wanna be like them
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little it looked like fun
And it's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done

    But Maybe I'm crazy
    Maybe you're crazy
    Maybe we're crazy
    Probably

The beach boys used one in good vibrations. I think its a kind of convaluted complicated way to get that sound. You can get it with a e-bow on a guitar or a guitar with a fernandez sustainer. Or just find a synthasizer sound like that and play it like a key board.

What I like about the theremin is that it is, as far as I know, the only instrument with an intangible, invisible and yet non-imaginary interface. There are no frets, no keys, no valves, no sticks, no skins, just the ærtist and the æther. OK, I will concede that the ærtist has to touch the ring to "make" silence.

Surely, this is the music of the Pleiades! I wonder if The Golden Age ever did a story on Professor Thermin's delightful device? The time period was right...

Here's a thermin cover of "Video Killed the Radio Star"

I believe on the Ed Sullivan show there was a guy who would come on and play this instrument. Was a kid then, and didn't pay attention to what it was called, but I thought it was neat.

Here's a guy who demonstrates SUPERB control of the instrument:

    Mr. Masami Takeuchi
