Nicky on HBO's Big Love last night asked her husband if he missed the commune, then said, "I left 100 in this place to live with 10 in the suburbs." (or something like that) Her husband asked if she regretted it, and she said no, but began weeping.

Out of Bill's 3 wives, Nicky is the one who still dresses like the cultists (styles of 100 years ago) and doesn't seem to be interested in the outside world at all (except for mail order catalogs). Moving to the suburbs has just distanced her socially but has not changed her life or mentality much.

As dysfunctional relationships often go, even good change can be difficult.

I for one still struggle with finding the balance between being a loner and my cultic childhood filled with people who had NO interpersonal boundaries and without privacy of any kind--even personal thoughts and details of private experiences (such as menstruation, sex, acne treatment) were public.

    i watched last night

the most JW'ish comment was Adeline who said she wanted the family picture because " jesus might come before labor day"

how many times have we heard a variation of that comment?

Adeline who said she wanted the family picture because " jesus might come before labor day"

There was an episode last season where Adeline was talking on the phone to someone and said something about the leadership saying the "end" was coming soon, and then said (paraphrased), "but then, they were wrong the other three times they said it was coming".

This is a great show. Last season and the first three episodes of this season beats the last three seasons of Sopranos hands down. I don't know if it's just the cult aspect of the show or what, but I sit almost spellbound each episode.

I get exactly what you are saying. And while I see tons of paralells, especially with the girl going to the exmorman support group, I see a lot of differences also. Like when that lady told the prophet's soon to be youngest wife, "You had better be in tact" I let out a "WHAT??" with a strange look at my hubby.

What did you think about the part when the prophet was asking that teenager if she is truly attracted to him, and believed her when she said yes?!

My mother tried to arrange a marriage for me to an older cultist--I was legally old enough though--but I felt my skin crawl in the same way then as when I watched that scene.

What about the scene when Nicki's mother was saying she is #34 of 52 children, and she is her own step-grandmother?! GROSS.

I am strangely mesmerized by this show--the social issues ring a bell for me.....
