Because it eliminated the prospect of hanky-panky. "Well, Pastor Russell wouldn't fool around with her since she was just a girl". Of course, that backfired because it gave rise to "Russell was a child molester" claims which are completely without merit.
The more interesting question that has puzzled me....Why did Bonnie Boyd lie so pathologically about her age? She did so on government documents, i.e. her various passports. It just makes me wonder, Why?
