Your Cell Phone Can Be Remotely Turned On!

Surprised that nobody has been screaming about this. It seems that even if you turn your cell phone off, it does not deactivate the unit. The CIA and FBI can actually turn it on by remote and use it as a bug and listen in to conversations even if you just leave it sitting out in the room - or the car - or the restaurant...endless opportunities. sammieswife.

The U.S. Commerce Department's security office warns that "a cellular telephone can be turned into a microphone and transmitter for the purpose of listening to conversations in the vicinity of the phone." An article in the Financial Times last year said mobile providers can "remotely install a piece of software on to any handset, without the owner's knowledge, which will activate the microphone even when its owner is not making a call."

Nextel and Samsung handsets and the Motorola Razr are especially vulnerable to software downloads that activate their microphones, said James Atkinson, a counter-surveillance consultant who has worked closely with government agencies. "They can be remotely accessed and made to transmit room audio all the time," he said. "You can do that without having physical access to the phone."

Because modern handsets are miniature computers, downloaded software could modify the usual interface that always displays when a call is in progress. The spyware could then place a call to the FBI and activate the microphone--all without the owner knowing it happened. (The FBI declined to comment on Friday.)

"If a phone has in fact been modified to act as a bug, the only way to counteract that is to either have a bugsweeper follow you around 24-7, which is not practical, or to peel the battery off the phone," Atkinson said. Security-conscious corporate executives routinely remove the batteries from their cell phones, he added.

People think I'm crazy when this topic comes up, but I agree with doing this. If it helps catch criminals and terrorists, I'm all for it. I believe that giving up some of our liberties and freedoms, if it is for the purpose of making our country safer, is a good thing. Lets face it: we can't really be trusted as a society with some of the freedoms that we are given. Because we will kill each other and steal from each other when it comes down to it.

As far as being monitored through my cell phone, I don't have anything to hide from anybody, so I don't care who hears me. They will be bored to tears if they listen to me for very long haha.

Take the battery out if you are worried you are the target of the FBI or some hacker. Hackers have been able to harrass people with the advanced cell phones, especially woman that own them.

I would have liked the ability to have turned on my bf's cell phone (or ex I mean).. he'd not come home all night and shut his phone off in order to avoid my calling and asking where he was at 1, 2 or 3 am....

what I would have paid to have been able to turn that puppy on and have it ring!

They did a program on TV here in UK last year about how we are watched by CCTV etc.

The guy doing the program met with one of his researchers at a cafe. He put his phone on table between them.

Later on in the program they showed how an investigator who followed him through the program listened in by the phone.

The guy sat in a car about 50 yards away with a laptop and with the right software was able to send a signal to the phone and turn it on so he could listen and record the conversation.

They also showed how this guy sat outside the presenters house with a laptop and logged on to the presenters laptop. They said how easy this is to do if youuse WI-FI (wireless) for your computers.
