Wednesday, July 11, 2007
The European Commission has issued a final warning to the National Roads Authority concerning the building of the M3 motorway in Meath. The letter dated in June says that the ongoing demolition of the Lismullen monument near the Hill of Tara is illegal, and that Ireland will face legal action this autumn.
The roads authority is continuing to record and destroy monuments in the path of the road, mostly recently a site at Baronstown which was demolished in the middle of the night last week.
Independent MEP Kathy Sinnott says road works must be stopped in the area at least until the Commission comes back after the summer.

It's typical of our government to just blunder along destroying our heritage for the sake of progress. Progress in this case means shortening journey times on a moderately busy stretch of road by about 15 minutes. And in the process destroying dozens of ancient monuments and artifacts. In theory, all the artifacts encountered are supposed to be recorded and then removed. In practice, these are being encountered a load of Polish construction workers with bulldozers eager to get the job finished who don't care all that much for Ireland's ancient heritage.
The action by the government has been widely criticised and condemned as illegal by the EU. But Irish politicians rarely listen to the people or to Europe. There's obviously huge amounts of money changing hands behind the scenes, something our politicians do know about.
One good thing about this situation is the number of important archaeological discoveries that have been made - even if most of them are being destroyed. Hopefully the efforts to halt it will succeed before any further destruction takes place - but I doubt it.
