Do you save files to CD and then forget what is on the CDs?

  I know I do. I have a shelf full of CDs that had to be searched individually every time I needed something.

  Well I have the program for you.

  Visual CD

  This nifty little freeware program will read all the file titles on a CD, your hard drive or just 1 folder and creates an index. You can then save the index. I have my CDs numbered

  When you are looking for a file just go through the vcc files and it will find the file and give you the number or title of the CD.

  NOTE: freeware programs mean the file won't stop working after a set period of time. There are no requests to BUY THIS NOW.

  I don't know how I managed before I got this program. ---------- Oh yes I do -- I kept saving files and putting them in different folders and then spent most of my time searching through dozens of CDs to find one file

  Oh one more thing it does ---- you can save the vcc files as text or html files and if you like hard copies to put in the CD jacket you can print them out.

  I'll have to try that out but not only do I have CD's & DVD's by the handfuls that I have no idea what is on them, I have a few Hard Drives from bygone computers that I need to pull things off of. It's going to be a job but I've got to get it done and get myself organized!!

  When I index a file using Visual CD I keep all the files in one folder.

  Each CD is given either a number or letter designation that I choose.

  I find a numbered system easier to deal with. Once they are indexed I can easily place the CDs on the shelf in an organized manner so that I can find the number I want faster than loading each disc into the CD ROM

  It's called a "Magic Marker" :P .
  
  You can actually write text information with a device called a 'hand'. The magic marker grants this text write protection, so it can never be deleted.[/silliness]

  I cant find anything unless it is right in front of me.

  A lot of the stuff that I save, falls into the out of site out of mind catergory.

  I bought an 200 gigabyte external hard drive for 150 bucks and put all my stuff on it. Worked much easier than burning a ton of cds.

  This old JW movie buff had a similar system, now that I remember. He has an enormous movie collection, and he paid his daughter to catalog it. The system was numbered/lettered blank VHSs, (hell, even has some on BetaMax!), and a binder with the info.
  
  Same idea, but different technology.
