    If the River Was Whiskey

If the river was whiskey and I was a duck
I'd dive to the bottom and I'd never come up

Oh tell me how long do I have to wait
Oh can I get you now, mustn't hesitate

If the river was whiskey and the branch was wine
You'd see me in swimming just any ole time

I was born in England, raised in France
I bought a suit of clothes and they wouldn't send the pants

I was born in Alabama, raised in Tennesee
If you don't like my peaches then don't shake my tree

I looked down the road just as far as I can see
A man had my woman and the blues had me

I ain't no doctor but the doctor's son
I can do the doctoring till the doctor comes

Got the hesitation stockings got the hesitation shoes
Oh my Lord I got the hesitation blues

I was born in Kingston, raised in Rosendale
I went through a stop sign and they threw me in jail

Does anyone know who wrote or performed that?

don't know about the original, but nick cave and the bad seeds recorded it as a b-side.

i searched and Billy Whiteman And His Orchestra looks like they recorded it in the 1930's...but it may have been a standard that was written years earlier.

i highly recommend the nick cave cover version....and now interested in hearing the whiteman version.

Appears to be a standard and the first known recording was by Mississippi Fred McDowell

Its very much a standard, but Fred McDowell is the first and also definitive version of the song. A couple of the local blues bands do this song too, one of them does a really great version.
