If you are an elder and trying to fade away from the organization, let me offer some warnings:
First, understand that there is much envy and jealousy in congregations of Jehovah's
Witnesses. Anticipate what might happen if you are its target.
Example: your son smoked weed once. The other elders let him off easy. Suddenly, after you
'step down', they are hounding him on different topics and want to disfellowship him.
This brings up a related matter: Don't trust others with your doubts or disbelief, they may
turn on you - and you may be facing a judicial committee - without the power you had
as an elder.
Don't be surprized if you resign as an elder and some publishers express outright glee to your
face, that you somehow 'got what you deserved' - even though you did nothing more than
'step down'. This sort of reaction may surprize you - including who it comes from.
You need to realize that the desire to punish is very strong, in the "truth".
In summary, I would recommend that you resign, claiming depression, and change congregations
immediately thereafter. Do not offer doubts or disbelief, especially in writing.
I offer the above , not from theory, but real experience.
