Confessions of a hungry insomniac

I started thinking about this earlier this evening while reading the 'What's for dinner' thread. Then around midnight I posted on the 'Did we land on the moon' thread about a 24 hour restaurant and it hit me: I'm hungry.

I'm a late night eater. I rarely go to bed before 2 or 3 most nights and then it's up at 6 and out the door to start the new day. Been that way with me for years. During the day I eat two meals, lunch and dinner. Don't ask me to breakfast unless you want to watch me drink a glass of water while you eat. But if you want to grab some late night grub, I'm there.

It's tough being a hungry person at 'abnormal' hours in Oklahoma. They really do roll up the streets and tuck them away after 10 pm and only unroll them again when the dawn breaks. The choices are limited in these parts. For years we only had Denny's and a couple of cafes that tasted good only if your taste buds were sufficiently drowned by 3.2 beer. It's just been in the past few years that some of the major chains have added late-night hours, but some of that stuff hardly qualifies as food in the daylight much less after midnight. My choices are: Denny's; IHOP; McYuck; Taco Bell; Taco Mayo (like Taco Bell but instead of advertising using a chihuahua, they cooked him); Wendy's (sometimes, I think their hours are contingent on how late the manager wants to stay open); Krispy Kreme (I think they're open, the 'fresh donuts' light is always on) and What-a-burger.

When I lived in Denver I knew that I could find something to eat at pretty much anytime of the day or night, not so here. So hook a (former) brother up and let me know what nightowls, if any of you are, can find to eat in your part of the world.

p.s. I found a Lean Cuisine in the freezer and a snack pack of Teddy Grahams

well, it's morning now, so too late for me. But I was a night owl my whole life, not going to sleep until 2 or 3 a.m. and not eating breakfast until other people eat lunch. In San Diego, where I used to live, night owls met at the Ralph's grocery store about 1 a.m., and silently cruised the aisles, reading labels. Out here in the desert, they roll up the sidewalks early - nothing much but fast food or a grocery store after 10 p.m.

something strange has happened to me, anyway. Since the drama with my husband earlier this year, I wake up early every morning, no matter how late I go to sleep (although that is rarely later than midnight.) What would make a lifelong nightowl change so suddenly to waking early? I have to tell you, it is godawful boring early in the morning.
