I ran into an old JW friend who remarked about the World Trade
tragedy, "We were hoping it was Armageddon".
Well, it wasn't -- and isn't
The world economic system didn't collapse. The banks didn't
fail. No nuclear war started. People and governments adapted
quickly and reorganized accordingly.
And even in the midst of horror, some positives emerged.
I was astounded by the kindness of strangers and the outpouring
of charity. It should shame the hateful hopes of Witnesses
everywhere in their kneejerk condemnations of 'worldly people'
and governments.
As for the future, I have no doubt there will be troubles with
terrorist incidents in the future - however, there is room for
optimism here:
Nihilistic religions and political movements die of themselves.
Nazism failed this way - death and mass murder are ugly goals
and only attractive to a few sociopaths. Predictions of another
Bin Laden bring up the question, name another guy with millions
in cash willing to live in a cave with few amenities - countless
Moslem leaders prefer trips to European casinos and hookers.
Hijackings are likely to be very difficult. The FBI sez 11 out
of 19 hijackers didn't know it was a suicide mission---
Not exactly helpful in getting future volunteers. Any hijacking
from here on will be likely spoiled by passengers/crew who
see 'nothing to lose' by violently opposing any takeover.
("we're gonna die anyway, if we don't do anything")
Bank liquidity was suddenly improved by masses of people
selling stock and banking the money. Also, the projected
shortage of electricity in NY state will be put off until at
least 2004 due to loss of the World Trade center and other changes.
