Our dog is in heat-and escaped out of the house (new dog owner)

Ok, that said, she was out for up to a half hour or so. We have a few wandering dogs. Boys. She is in her second heat. I really don't want her to have ANY puppies, but we are kind of deciding still if we might breed her once (she is a darling dog, pure mini shnauzer, very sweet tempered). I am concerned that she might have met one of the boys. How soon could we tell if she is preg? My daughter is sick of the "little bitch in heat" jokes, but I really don't know how long it lasts or when we would know one way or the other. My daughter wants me to get a puppie preg test:) I asked her why-does she think we will get her an abortion if we catch it early? (Appalled daughter!) I am not taking her to the doc for a exam! If she ends up NOT being preg, I will prob get her spayed asap though.

My main concern is the wanderers are BIG/tall dogs. My dog is about 9-10 lbs. Little bitty thing. If she had puppies, would it be safe for her to have those puppies?

You need to do this quickly, but they do have a "morning after" shot for dogs so that the pregnancy doesn't "take". We did this several years ago when one of our dogs got out. I think the window of time for doing this is only a few days. Call your vet and tell him your situation. btw, all the injection does is keep the fertilized egg from being implanted... the shots just give a mild spasm to the dogs "innards" ... the dog doesn't even know. (hehe)

If she got loose no telling who she mated with, but if she was that small the males can't be that big....I do know after owning English Bulldogs they cannot deliver their own puppies and have to have a cesarian birth...ie: the reason for $1500.00 to 2000.00 per puppy.

Get your dog spayed as soon as possible.

It might not have even transpired but there is no telling.

Take the advice of above posters.
