As far as economics go I basically think it is an issue of resources. If people have the extra capital they will do all kinds of crazy things with it.
Even with the "debt" that Amercians are getting into will have it's limits. Eventually it won't be so easy to get credit and people will make do with what they have.
With that said, the Holidays are absolutely absurd in the US. -

I know so many people that cry broke all of the time and can't afford certain necessities in life such as health insurance for their kids while at the same time they are wearing Uggs, Abercrombie & Fitch jeans, Ralph Lauren Sweaters, The North Face jacket, and a large Coach handbag to accessorize.
