Bizarre fallout from the War on Drugs

  Front page article in the local news rag: mom walking kindergartener to school in ittybitty town nearby finds gun lying curbside next to the playground. Turns it in to school principal. Gun is identified as belonging to a Medway drug enforcement agent. Medway does not respond to phone calls regarding incident.

  Mommie wants to know, how the smegging hell did this guy LOSE HIS GUN and how/why was it left lying around until 1 pm on a school day?

  Am I wrong to be very alarmed at this? Can any of you figure a viable scenario where this could be excusable? Even if the weapon was stolen the agent is culpable for not keeping it secure. And why won't the drug agency explain it to the press?

  Imagining what could have happened if a child had picked it up instead of a parent...
  If they can't keep their gun in their pants should these guys be allowed to be armed?

  This sounds like a strange story, and is likely extremely rare. Normally, a person finding a gun like that would not take it onto school grounds, at least not in the USA. The metal detectors at schools would alarm. And the person attempting to bring the gun to a school, even to turn it over to the Principal would be arrested and charged for this. Most states have felony laws for bringing guns into a school. Rather, a person finding the gun would take it to the police, and file a report.

  Secondly, most officers I have talked with are supposed to check in their duty weapon at the Precinct when they leave work. Nowadays, in most states, and officer is licensed to practice law enforcement in any jurisdiction, and are therefore allowed to own and carry a private weapon. They are technically on duty 24 hours a day.

  I seriously doubt that a police officer just let the gun "drop out of his pants," and then not notice it. He likely had it drawn in a conflict, and after a struggle to handcuff the bad guys, he may have lost it. If it was a personal weapon, it could have been stolen from him, and he may not have known it was gone, especially if he kept the weapon in a car, and forgot to lock the car.

  This is an odd story though. Another way that this could happen is if the officer was involved in dirty business and dropped his gun in persuit or being chased, and then didn't report this when he checked out for the day. mmmmm fascinating. - Amazing
