This note was sent out today by our company nurse.

For all of you who yourself or your children are now doing indoor sports please be aware that there is a drug resistant bacteria called MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). Because of the resistant antibiotic it can be a long and painful recovery.

The major ways to avoid this bacteria is to:

Shower & wash with soap after all practices and competitions

Do not share towels or any personal items (clothing, equipment & razors)

Clean your equipment frequently (e.g. helmets, pads, uniforms)

Wipe down weight machines after each use with a disinfecting cleaner (Peabody YMCA has already set this up)

Report skin lesions to coaches and see your MD

This bacteria has reached many professional athletes including the Boston Celtics.

One out of twenty people have the MRSA bacteria on thier skin all the time. Most of us have a strong immune system and do not have any problems. It's most dangerous to anyone with a compromised immune system. As always the news media has elevated it into near mass hysteria for the sake of ratings.

If it was that easy to get then 5% of the population would get it every time they got a cut or a scrape. Which means in the US 15,056,997 people would get it each year times the number of scratches, scrapes and cuts they get in a given year.

You are most likely to get it in a hospital which has rigorous daily cleaning and sanitizing procedures.

It is very rampant in jails too.
