I recently did a computer favor for a JW gentleman who is the "Secretary" in his congregation.
He appears to be running a small db that stores congregation records on a flashdrive.
Apparently for security reasons this information is never to go on a PC hard drive. (Ostensibly because most PC's are eventually donated, handed down to children or become garage sale fodder.)
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I wonder if this is policy from the top or just an individual thing?
I don't blame them for this. I'm posting someone's journal on my blog that I pulled from a trashed PC.
I recall years ago they said essentially the same thing, to keep records on floppy disks rather than on hard drives.
Sounds to me like the cultists are updrading.
Personally, I wouldn't want my records stored on a flash drive, which is easy to lose, and I'm sure most JWs have no idea what encryption is.

I don't recall any such direction being given "officially".
I do recall instructions to encrypt files, or at least password-protect them, if stored on a PC.
Most elders over the age of 60 (and likely a distrubing proportion of those under 60) probably think that computers are the haunt of demons, and so avoid them at all costs.
Flash drives seem to be popular with burglars who know what they are. :-(
The only 100% secure record is in the memory of a dead person.
Good news, plug your flash drive in the next port and copy all...
