Wondered if anyone else is going to be watching this programme tonight...

    ---

DOCUMENTARY: The End of The World Cult
    On: Channel 4 (4)
    Date: Wednesday 12th December 2007
Time: 22:00 to 23:05 (1 hour and 5 minutes long)

Michael Travesser says he's the Messiah. He claims that 31 October 2007 is Doomsday and at midnight on that date there will be an event of apocalyptic proportions, marking the end of the world. Formerly a sailor called Wayne Bent, Michael is the leader of a cult in New Mexico called Strong City.
    (Watch Online, Subtitles)

    ---

It's also on an hour later on Channel 4 Plus 1.

I wonder how many parallels there will be with the WTS.

Then we must be already in hell as October 31, 2007 has come and gone.

Is this program going to be transmitted in the States? Where is this channel 4 you're talking about? United Kingdom?

So sad. You can see the seeds of doubt in his son, Jeff, who seems to show a certain level of understanding as to how weird the cult seems to outsiders. But he continues to convince himself his Dad is legitimately Jesus, which reminds me of how we fooled ourselves before about the WTS.

As usual, the cult is made up of people who can't come to terms with the real world being as it is.

He changed the date to the 15th of December, by the way. I wonder what he'll do once 2008 rolls in.

    Other interpretations

Some scholars believe that no intelligible specific fulfillment exists. Among these are J.A. Montgomery and Edward Young.

More on the fringes, Michael Travesser[3][4][5], spiritual leader of Strong City sect[6][7], calculated 490 years, or 70 "weeks of years" from 31 October 1517, the publication of Martin Luther's 95 Theses. Thus he predicts the fulfillment of Daniel's prophesy for late 2007.[8]

This doco is on New Zealand's TV2 at 9:30 pm Thursday 12th.

Unfortunately that means that most JWs will be at the Kingdumb Hell while it's on.

The video is online here. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6926788668376195177

I've seen this one. It's excellent. There are many simlarities between the mental state of these cult members and JWs (and other apocalyptic cults). There are several moments during the film in which you'll hear something that could have easily been stated by a JW.

I had a discussion about my JW upbringing with a long time friend a few weeks ago. He doesn't believe the JWs are a cult.

I ran into him at the pub tonight.

"If you want to see a real cult watch 20/20 tonight!" he said.

"So they are a cult and the Jws are not a cult? How many of them have died?"

    "I don't know."

"I saw this months ago, I have it on my hard drive. None of them died. Thousands of JWs die every year for their beliefs. Do you think they are a cult because they are a small group and the JWs are not because they are a big group, even though the JWs are the ones that die for their beliefs?"

    "Well...Ummm... Yes? "
