Can Brooklyn become a Search Engine?

This morning, as I was reading a couple of threads about JW's and computers, Brooklyn maybe putting the KM, and study WT on computer for JW's to download themselves, I had a thought. I dismissed it, but it has been nagging me.

Now I don't know anything about computers. I can surf the net, shop and spend money, and spend my days here with you all.

    QUESTION

Can Brooklyn make their own search engine, that as a JW, when I log on to a computer, I type in "The Gods of Brooklyn" and get them, instead of Yahoo, or Google? They restrict the sites, that I can or can't go to. Just as a business does, that keeps an eye on their employees. JWD would probably be in their top 5 of restricted sites.

They could also direct me to advertisements for goods, that the society has stock in. They could also have a mail order for their own products, or products produced by other Witnesses. Like potholders made by a sister in Seattle, who can't donate much to the Society, so she makes a potholder, and we are offered it, and through a credit card, or pay pal type payment, the society gets the money from the sale, and the woman mails it to me. She has contributed, and the money stays with the JW's.

They would also charge for the use of their search engine.

More control, over what is looked at, on the internet, more money made for Brooklyn, Have they ever thought of getting into the Home Schooling business? So many questions!!!!!

They can. Just like Fisher-Price has a toy called Easy Link that is connected to the computer and only lets the child visit the websites it's programmed to allow. It's not difficult to do, it wouldn't surprise me if they did just that. In fact, it surprises me they haven't done it yet.

Horrible Life, it sounds like you are talking about a lost engine rather than a search one.

LOL@Abandoned. Well, it is a search, not a find engine...

So I'm not stupid!!! HaHa I can picture all of the good little JW's subscribing to this. Even little old sisters, buying a computer, so they can be closer to the Faithful and Discreet Slaves. They could put up the daily text, on the home page.

I can picture the blinking glittery sign, in the top right corner, Give, Give, Give We take Visa. Then the R&F would give directly to the society, and just by-pass the KH boxes. The elders pay for the electricity themselves. They skip the middle men. (kingdom halls)

Having the sales site, I think is a great idea. It's a no-brainer. It could operate just like ebay. Bid, or buy it now. Instead of a JW sister having a garage sale, just list it on WABAY, and all of the money goes to the Society. And you won't get any of those pesky Demons!!!!!!!!

Mastodon, do you really think that they have thought about this? Or should Simon erase my thread?

I am sure that they could, but would they ?? I do not see it happening ..They know that people would become curious for what was denied them, like Eve in the Garden of Eden.

This brings back to mind a thought that occurred to me though, How every new development in technology or mass communication goues through a process of being first of all demonised and slated by the Borg, then grudgingly accepted and finally accepted with enthusiasm.

I was not around in early days of radio, and perhaps that is the exception, but TV was being heavily criticised in my childhood in the WTS. It was commonly called a "one eyed monster" and viewed as Satan's entry into your living room. I can remember of those theatrical Circuit Assembly demonstrations in which an old fashioned telly with doors suddenly opened and Satan's face was peering out...Later on it is accepted and used , eg the "Knocking" documentary..Same with the video , horribly criticised as a tool for those who could not get enough TV and the opportunity to hire X rated films, Today the Borg produces a range of videos and tells the flock to watch them at home as meeting preparation when they discuss them, so they have to have a VCR , DVD etc.

The same will happen with the net. Already they are using it to their own advantage, as any business should, When they learn to shut up about "apostate sites" they will cease whetting the appetite of youth to find out what they say..

    If I understand you correctly...

Can Brooklyn make their own search engine,

    Yes, it's possible. Not probable.

...that as a JW, when I log on to a computer, I type in "The Gods of Brooklyn" and get them, instead of Yahoo, or Google?

    ???

Type in "The Gods of Brooklyn" where? Into the URL bar of your browser?

Ordinarily, no one has that kind of control over your computer unless you are "Behind" one of their proxy servers. .

They restrict the sites, that I can or can't go to. Just as a business does, that keeps an eye on their employees. JWD would probably be in their top 5 of restricted sites.

Same answer. Employees get their internet access via the company's internal network. Standing at the gateway of company internal networks are the company proxy servers and routers which the company I.T. department has direct control over. Employee internet access can therefore be controlled via proxy server software and router acl's.

Unless you live at Bethel (?) you're internet access does not pass through the Watchtower Society's network.

The only possible way for anyone to exercise that level of control outside of their internal network would be via the deliberate installation of software on your system without your knowledge or consent. This would be an illegal and extremely foolish thing for them to do.
