Hi all I know that you guys have probably discussed this to death so I thank you in advance!!!!. I have (through this site) been exposed to this horrible fact - I must say I had never heard of anything like it before (well amongst the JWs anyway). I've gone to the link here www.watchtowerdocuments.com and have been onto silentlambs.com.

The thing is - being in South Africa no one and I mean no one has been exposed to this news about what is happening in this faith. None of our TV stations have broadcast it - how would one go about bringing this to the South Africans attention? I suppose I could write to one of our stations but how would I ""prove"" that this is legit.

I really feel strongly about this and would like as much information/contacts/advice/anything, as I feel that this needs come out - America seems so far away when you're living here in the Southern Hemisphere, we kinda get left out of the big news.

Your help in this regard would be very much appreciated.

Isn't sexual abuse a pretty regular problem in South Africa? I know during the Opera scandal they were saying it was a common problem for teachers to abuse students and almost common place.

Funnily enough - we didn't even get to see much of that whole Oprah scandel. It does happen rather frequently, especially in the poorer, black communities ( a lot has to do with suspicians regarding aids: eg if you have sex with a young person it will cure aids - people are still very un-educated when it comes to aids) Just because it happens more frequently doesn't desensitise it.

However I would like the Witnesses to be exposed - that they try cover up their tracks. This hasn't been done here yet.

Well what I am wondering is, do people react the same in the U.S. to it as they do there? I know you said no one is desensitized but would you get the "it's just the way it is here" defense? Or you might get the, "that happened in the States not here!" reaction. It hits home hard in the States because it's in our own backyards, I am sure if the scandal happened in Europe no one would care much here in the States.

I hear what you are saying - but who knows - it could be happening here too, just that people are too afraid to come forward - however if they knew that the Witnesses have already been exposed in the U.S.A, they may not feel afraid to speak up. I think when it comes to this type of thing, no matter where it happens, it's shocking. It would make people/perhaps even JWs sit up and think twice about 1. leaving your children alone with elders/ms 2. if they have been effected - that they can speak out....

I would think the first step would be mobilizing the ex witnesses in your area. They can give more insight on rumors/problems that sort of thing, then go from there.

    Hi Loubelle and Burgertime

I agree with your comments completely. The fact that this whole pedo situation in the states exists is shocking, but because it is the states, it seems so far away and I am sure that if I were to approach anyone I knew here, they would use the "well that happened in America" defense. I am sure that it the same thing were to be exposed here, it would cause significant waves within the org. here... and I can't imagine that it hasn't happened.

As for mobilising the ExJW's here - well I know that there are many, but how to get them into action, I dont know?

    Take care

    Boo

I got hold of silent lambs and they have replied with quite a bit of help.

Seems the first step is to actually find out if anything like this has happend with in the ranks of the JWs here in south - africa - they suggest taking out a simple advert. I'm going to do that and see how it goes. I only know of 2 South Africans on here but if push comes to shove could I call on you guys for support (in case that victim is in your part of the Country)

I've already started a Facebook group so I'm going to see how it goes.

    thanks
