When I was younger and heard about posessed people, I always volunteered to do an exorcism (making up qualifications). I thought if there were demons, I'd love to go nose to nose with those bad boys. Nobody ever took me up on the offer.

I have never seen or do I believe anyone has ever seen a spirit that would do them harm. The main harm comes through fear and mind control which religions through the ages have been expert at. I would go to any ritual and ask them to show me a spirit. I do not believe they could. More likely any harm done to anyone is in ways we already know - human to human or animal etc.
It is worrying and is a possible form of mind control. Maybe it is his way of calming some disturbed people who have been conditioned to believe in spirits and need a strong character to lean on in whose powers they believe.
Millions worldwide would be better studying science and agnosyicism/atheism to get a better control of their own minds. The trouble is that millions are being born and the education is not there so in steps religion to fill the void!

R.Crusoe - I agree! The Roman Catholic Church has been decrying the world's 'lack of spirituality' for many years, which it is basically decrying the decline in Roman Catholics!
To regain control of the 'spiritual minds' of the world it must first cause fear. Demon Possession is once such fear of primitive and uneducated peoples. If it can drive fear back into the minds of people it can also claim to hold the 'cure' to these fears in its own hands and therefore regain control of the minds of the insecure, the misfits and the malcontents!
Fascinating how spirit possession is a feature of the uneducated primitives of Africa and other third world countrys and has declined in the west except amongst the mentally unstable or religiously extreme!
Whether the Roman Catholic Church can actually achieve much with such fear mongering is interesting.
The Vatican is rumoured to have the biggest Occult library in the world and is itself the source of many occult practices from its inception.
Fascinating that the Roman Catholic Church is infact going to be playing the parts of God and the Devil and interesting to see how many of the ignorant fall into its very clever trap.

Yes Gill and the scientific population has over 80% claimed atheism amongst its ranks and is surprised at how religion is on the increase worldwide. It is due to what we know, the uneducated don't find out the perspective on religion until they have educational establishments delivering that message to them. But most governments know the success of religion in controlling large numbers of people down the centuries and so are more likely to fund this guaranteed way of ensuring successful economies and capitalist values. Is there a model for how atheist societies progress? Maybe ones not into high science etc. all lie back and have orgies. Maybe that's what worries the powers that be -LOL How would you get people to work every morning or to church Sundays?
Maybe societies in which individuals have free minds are less easy to control and rally for a commom cause. It's amazing how over 80% of the highly educated just don't buy ancient religious theories. Some that are religious have their own informed idea of God personal to them rather trhan accept some of the dogmas in existing ancient beliefs. Religion and politics may have more to do with controlling large groups of people in predictable ways than with any will of God!
