Shock, disempowerment, vulnerability. All of these are reasonable reactions to last week¹s horrible attack upon Americans and their government and financial institutions, the cultural framework that makes us all feel strong.

"Unfortunately, at a time when many Americans are feeling down, there is another threat coming from within our borders," says Steven Hassan, director of the Freedom of Mind Resource Center in Somerville MA. "Cults are out aggressively recruiting, preying on Americans¹ sense of vulnerability and helplessness."

    Hi NYT,

thank god witnesses are not a cult

Yes, perhaps we should include that thought in our prayers....

'Dear God, thank you that we are not a cult but the only true religion' - Brother Hall am I allowed to say that in my prayer?

I still think the biggest reason people join cults is not from external threats or fears but inner feelings of insecurity and needing a sense of identity and belonging.

Tell me, NYT, how can this discussion board create cultic behaviour? Is there one person or group here who can make everybody abstain from one thing and do something else? No. Your example is ridiculous. The guiding principle here is freedom of expression, which is why you can post what you like. Try speaking your mind at a KH some time! (YOUR thoughts, not those of the collective)
