1880 "The Day Dawn"--PDF!--J. H. Paton BM=Bookmarked S=Searchable Ref=Referenced (2nd copy) R=Reduced from 82 MB to 36 MB 1880 "The Day Dawn" J. H. Paton, 334 pages. Written by one of C.T. Russell's partners which was sold and recommended by the WTB&TS, but not published by them. NOTE: This is the book from which Russell got his "Millennial Dawn" ideas. This book advertised and sold by Watchtower colporteurs is of importance because it is a "pro-Trinitarian" book! On page 225 Paton states: **************************************************************** "The work of the Holy Spirit is one of the most important elements in the plan of revelation and salvation. He is always spoken of by the Saviour as a Person, and is called the "Spirit of truth." "He inspired men to write or speak the truth; and second, He enables men to understand it." "By comparing this with 1 Pet. 1:11, it will be seen that the Holy Spirit and the Spirit of Christ are used interchangeably." *************************************************************** He, Him, or a Person. Also, there is made mention of the Holy Spirit AND the Spirit of Christ "interchanging" in their use. The April 1881, Zion's Watch Tower, p.214 said: "That you go forth into large or small cities, according to your ability, as Colporteurs or Evangelists, seek to find in every place the earnest Christians, many of whom you will find possessed of a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge; to these seek to make known the riches of Our Father's grace, and the beauties of His word, giving them tracts; and as a work of kindness and love to them, endeavor to sell them the "Day Dawn," or to take their subscription for the "Watch Tower," [or if interested, but too poor to purchase, presenting the same as a gift from God."] Scan: http://www.badongo.com/pic/2684514 It is interesting to note the importance of "The Day Dawn" book back in 1881. The procedure for presenting the literature instructs colporteurs to offer the "Day Dawn," first even before a mention of the Watch Tower! So, this was one occasion when the Watch Tower took a back-seat to "pro-Trinitarian" literature! A scan of the above Watch Tower and two others are also included as the last three pages of this PDF! (1880, Zion's Watch Tower, June p.111/1881, Zion's Watch Tower, April p.214/1882, Zion's Watch Tower, May p.346). When Russell was partner with Nelson Barbour the Christadelphians were condemned for their "non-trinitarian" viewpoint. (See "Three Worlds" pp.57-58). Russell began to publish articles against the "Trinity" doctrine when he split with Paton in 1882. *************************************************************** Instructions concerning the "search" feature in this pdf. This pdf includes 2 copies of "The Day Dawn" for researchers. (1) The old original and (2) another copy for reference. Due to the age of the older documents, we noticed deterioration of ink quality in some words. So, the 2nd copy which is of better ink quality is your "search reference" file. For instance, if you were searching to find the two words, (Divine revelation) in this pdf, you would simply type in those two words into your search tool and click (find), and automatically your tool will take you to the (reference) file and highlight those two words. Then, look to your left and you will see this example: DD31 That would mean, (Day Dawn page 31). Then, just scroll up or use your bookmarks to take you back up to the older original copy for that page. It would look like this: http://www.badongo.com/pic/2683976 *************************************************************** Download instructions: Click the download link by the red arrow at the bottom of the next page. http://www.sendspace.com/file/we2nac Another download link: Click the orange download button at the bottom left of the next page when it appears. http://www.filesend.net/download.php?f=e041299b33b1404876184e7371640cb2 Cheers! Atlantis,
No wonder the work of C. H. Patton was finally rejected by the WTS. He demonstrated in his book that he did not understand scripture or translation. And they finally recognized it. But they did not do much better themselves. By following men like this they kept on teaching the errors presented by them. The teaching that the holy spirit is God as part of a Trinity is translation dependent. It is not supported by Jews. And scripture never supported such thinking. Look at the way it is rendered in several versions.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. (John 3:8)
the Spirit where he willeth doth blow, and his voice thou dost hear, but thou hast not known whence he cometh, and whither he goeth; thus is every one who hath been born of the Spirit.’ (John 3:8-YLT)
Translations whether intentionally or unintentionally can hide truth. And they can reveal truth. It does not matter if a person represents the spirit in a text. Some when speaking for God, human or otherwise can be identified using words such as spirit or holy spirit. It does matter however that we know that the Spirit is not a person of itself that somehow makes up God. You see two different translations above. That translators are not consistent with simple words such as Spirit, he or it rendered differently and not even capitalization can be trusted as shown in the texts below. And we learn that we can also be born of the Spirit which does not mean that we become God somehow. You all know that. But we do learn that words are spirit as this is one of the many meanings and uses that this word conveys. Definitions cannot do justice to such flexible use. OT texts are also identified using the word spirit. Is it any wonder that so many fail to understand its proper use? The word was common in OT texts but nowhere will we learn it is God. It is of God, or wisdom, or a familiar evil spirit and many other things.
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life. (John 6:63)
The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. (John 6:63 NIV)
Tampering with the Greek grammar regarding these words is unjustified and the New American Bible in a footnote on John 14:14,17 states:
"The Greek word for "Spirit" is neuter, and while we use personal pronouns in English ("he," "his," "him,"), most Greek MSS (Manuscripts) employ "it.""
If we are careless we will fall for Trinitarian arguments just like many here have fallen for WTS arguments and followed them. It is time we investigated such matters for ourselves.

Atlantis,
This is an important work to make available for historical researchers. I think Paton's role in influencing the young C.T. Russell has not been as fully recognized as it ought to be.
This was the first book that the Watchtower magazine promoted to its readers. As you mentioned, this was the book that the "1,000 Preachers" the WT wanted were to circulate. This book deserves more study in WT history and you've provided the means for us to do that!
Thanks for the hard work in putting this together!
