That makes sense, if you put a mark on a cow that would be a mark on the beast, or mark of the beast.
Maybe the Wactower was making more out of it than was intended.

No there are humans that have them implanted already.
Do a search on RFID or Verichip.
The technology is now advanced enough for this to be fulfilled. After all, cash is becoming obsolete and we are almost doing this already with the chip on our credit/debit cards.

When I was at high school, about '77', there was a pentecostal group at school who made much of their belief that those who belonged to the antichrist were going to submit to having a BARCODE implanted in or tattooed on them.
This would be the start of all the nasties and the economic collapse of the world etc., etc.,.
So... this was 31 years ago.
There is nothing new under the sun. As long as there are youngsters involving themselves with religion we will have the 'calamity howlers'. -

I have no problems with it being a bar code. Have a look at what it at the start, middle and end of a bar code...
That said it could easily be a chip or something else. The important thing is not exactly what the mark will be but that we now have the technological power to track everyone's buying and selling, banking etc. worldwide.
That technology wasn't a reality 30 years ago but they were looking at where we were going and we are there now. With the global networks, mind boggling computing power and more and more monitoring and tracking of our electronic and non-electronic lives, it is clear that 'the mark of the beast' doesn't look so far fetched now. Neither does the possibility of one worldwide government, one leader, one monetary unit as Revelation states too. I wonder if George Orwell was inspired by it?

It ready to roll out in the US. The only thing is the chip is on an ID card and not an implant.
However, once everyone has got used to the card, how much objection will there be to putting the chip in the body? After all, it is easy to forget or loose a card!
