Source: This Is London The true scale of a suicide epidemic among young people in a small town was revealed yesterday.

As well as the seven deaths linked to social networking websites, a coroner revealed that a further six had also died within a year.

The astonishing rate of hangings in Bridgend, South Wales, has terrified parents in the area and one secondary school has been placed on 'suicide watch' after pupils appealed for help.

Of the seven "internet" suicides which culminated in the death last week of 17-year-old Natasha Randall, each victim was known by at least one of the others.

Although the six other deaths revealed by coroner Philip Walters are believed to be isolated incidents, he said they show that the problem is even more widespread than originally feared.

"I am very concerned," he said. "It is very important that we get to grips with the situation.

Victim: Natasha Randall was found hanged last week. At least 12 others youngsters from Bridgend have died in the same way within the past year

"There are 12 young men and one young woman involved and all were found hanged in the area in the last year."

One of the other victims, James Knight, 26, hanged himself from a belt during a heavy drinking session after a painful break-up with his girlfriend.

Another, Andrew O'Neill, 20, died after being convicted of drink-driving and assaulting a police officer. A further hanging victim was lorry driver

Jason Williams, 21, only months before he was due to marry. His bride-to-be said she was mystified by his suicide.

Police investigating the six further suicides do not believe they were linked to the other seven deaths in the town, whose population is less than 40,000.

A spokesman said: "Although it is an absolute tragedy for the families involved, we do not believe they knew each other."

As investigations into the multiple deaths continued yesterday, a secondary school attended by a 15-year-old who recently tried to take her own life announced new measures to tackle the problem.

Leah Phillips was moments away from death when her stepfather found her hanging by a rope from the banister of their home near Bridgend the day after her 17-year-old friend Natasha died.

Now senior staff at her school have announced the creation of an "anti-suicide taskforce" after 12 of her fellow students made a plea for help.

Teachers at Ynysawdre Comprehensive set up the group to "prevent further tragedies" and held discussions with a charity aimed specifically at preventing suicide and depression in the young.

Deputy head Michelle Hatcher said the school "felt the need to act swiftly" to tackle the problem.

    Brigend

Bridgend: The town has gained notoriety as the suicide capital of Britain. The number of young people found hanged is almost twice as many as previously thought

She said: "There were 12 pupils who are friends of this girl and they came to us and asked for help. The news was already ripping through the school about this girl trying to commit suicide.

"We knew we had to act quickly so we held a special assembly to explain to pupils there was support within and outside the school if they need to talk. We have a school counsellor they can always talk to, as well as other teachers or myself, the school's child protection officer."

The 920-pupil school has been shocked by the spate of suicides in the town, and Leah's mother last night said the school was acting sensibly to protect the pupils.

    Phillip Walters coroner

Phillip Walters: The coroner has revealed 13 young people have hanged themselves in Bridgend

Tina Phillips, 40, said: "I am shocked that 12 children have come forward - it's astonishing. You don't realise how depressed these children are.

"It is definitely a good idea for the school to be on suicide watch.

"If they can help them to prevent it happening again that's got to be a good thing.

"In our experience there are no signs - you don't know what to look for. It is very worrying.

"It is a start if they have come forward to talk about it, because they weren't talking about it before. I thought there might be one or two but not 12."

Could it be something in the water? Sounds out there, but i read that some metals affect susceptible people negatively. Discover magazine article discussed this a few yrs ago. I can't find it, now. Just a possibility.

    Another possibility, accutane:

"Accutane is one of the top three drugs for the most reported adverse side effects on the FDA's database. The FDA estimates that only one in one hundred side effects ever get reported to the FDA.

Accutane is prescribed for the treatment of severe, disfiguring cystic acne that has not resolved in response to milder medications such as antibiotics. It works on the oil glands within the skin, shrinking them and diminishing their output.

Accutane is taken by mouth everyday for several months and then stopped. The antiacne effect produced by Accutane can last even after finishing a course of medication. Accutane, generically known as Isotretinoin, is a synthetic derivative of Vitamin A.

The side effects caused by this drug can be horrific. Accutane gained notoriety in the mid to late eighties for the severe birth defects caused by the drug. In addition to birth defects, the drug is associated with causing severe psychiatric side effects as well as many systemic side effects including damage to the liver, kidneys, central nervous system, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system, musculosketal system, and the auto-immune system of the human body.

Many side effects are permanent, severe and devastating to an individual. The fact that so many people are experiencing adverse effects from this drug is not surprising.

In 1998, the Food and Drug Administration advised doctors who prescribe Accutane to monitor their patients for signs of depression. Subsequently, the manufacturers of Accutane, Hoffman-LaRoche, notified doctors that the drug "may cause depression, psychosis, and, rarely, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and suicide."

However, the knowledge of the potential danger associated with Accutane did not become widely known until a Congressman's son committed suicide. Rep. Bart Stupak stated that his 17-year-old son's suicide may be linked to the popular acne medicine. Bart Stupak, Jr., also known as "BJ", shot himself in the head with his father's gun. Stupak, who was a football player and a popular student, killed himself after a prom-night party.

In assessing how many potential suicide cases linked to Accutane, Rep. Stupak stated, "We are up over 100 reports, that's just what is coming in to us, so I believe there are probably over a thousand cases." Stupak also stated that, "the average time is 88 days from when you start taking it, and the effect is very sudden…. You are doing strange things at 3:00 a.m. and you are dead at 7:00 a.m."

The FDA has received reports of 66 suicides and 1,373 cases of psychiatric problems among Accutane users as of early December 2000, according to a report in USA Today. Accutane's package warning first addressed the potential relationship between Accutane and depression in 1986.

Although French officials required that Hoff-LaRoche add the risk of suicide to the package insert of the European version of Accutane in March 1997, the FDA did not require such a change in the USA until 1999. As recently as November 2002, Roche Laboratories distributed a "Dear Doctor" letter to physicians regarding severe adverse events -- this time concerning a greater risk of bone fractures during therapy with their medication.

In September 2000, Hoffmann-LaRoche reported to the FDA advisory committee that since Accutane's approval in September 1982, five million people in the United State and twelve million people worldwide have taken the drug. The majority of these people are teens and young adults. Accutane, an oral medication, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of recalcitrant cystic nodular acne. However, through clever marketing to health care providers and through generic advertising in media outlets such as Nickelodeon, an estimated 90% of all Accutane prescriptions are given for "off-label" uses.

Accutane is one of Hoffmann-La Roche's top three drugs, having sales of approximately 1.2 billion dollars annually. We obtained testimony, given by Roche's representatives in the early 1980's, indicative that the manufacturer expected 100% of all patients taking the drug to experience side effects. Unfortunately, Hoffmann-LaRoche marginalized the more severe side effects of Accutane and focused on minor conditions such as dry skin."

    Horrific.

It is so important to keep the minds of our children free. We need to protect them from all forms of mind control. Peers can be such a powerful influential force.

    Parents take note!!

Just because one has left the JW Cult, does not mean we abandon teaching good morals and respect life. It means we can teach those concepts more fully.

I am not sure they are part of any particular religious cult, they knew each other and all networked on bebo. In the paper today it was talking about the girl last week and as far as her boyfriend reported there was no signs that morning she was going to commit suicide. He said she woke up and was perfectly happy and smiley. They were laughing and joking had eaten her breakfast and put her makeup on. She was training in child care and loved it. The police are looking at a possible suicide chain now, don't think it was particularly a religious cult
