Hearing all kinds of 'horror stories', I'm wondering if anyone here has ever had a computor virus actually totally ruin their computor, so that you had to buy a new one? Or is this an unfounded rare thing?

Oh, I wouldn't worry abo.........................................................................------------------------------------------------------------===============================================+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It's called the BLOODHOUND virus. Look it up.
You get *pinged* for it if you learn too much......
I've had my windows operating system wiped out, but I press F5 on power up and it restores the system often with all my data intact. Works for HP pavillion
I got one once and it shut down my computer. I would have sworn it was dead for good (blue screen). I called a computer guy and he came and fixed it.
Viruses create software problems, not hardware problems. If it really comes down to it, all you have to do is re-install the software, and you'll be good to go. Unfortunately, Microsoft is making that kind of a fix more difficult these days.
I bought a pretty decent PC at a thrift store for $10. All that was wrong with it was a buggered Windows installation. I installed a new operating system (not Windows), and it worked fine.
Time for a MAC! OS2 guy
I've never heard of anyone's computer being ruined. I've had virus many times. Sometimes I could remove them mysef. Sometimes I had to wipe hard drive and reinstall Windows. With XP, though they made it so complicated I had to have a tech do it and retrieve some of my needed data. Cost a little over a hundred bucks. Computer is still fine.
