i'm sitting in the layby waiting for my littlun to come out of schools back gate, it usually takes her a ten minute dawdle, the ten minutes comes and goes, five policemen walk across the road and up the path towards the school, still no sign of littlun,

eventually at 3.52 my mobile phone rings, 'theres been a bit of a chemical leak, the children in the offending building have all been checked by paramedics, can you come and pick her up?'

i drive past the news wagons parked along the road into the main car park which is swarming with police cars, police, and cameramen. cant get near the main door for camera men so i rang her mobile to come out.

as i'm driving littlun away from the school, i asked her if she'd been given a yellow hazard slip with the name of the chemical thats sposed to of leaked.....nup

so i lean out the car and ask one of the policemen what the chemical was.

''PepperSpray!!!'' WTF????, so thats the latest packed lunch accessory? now the kids need gas masks as well as flack jackets?

although the incident is reported as 12.20 littlun thinks it was more 11.30ish cos of the class she was in at the time.

she was one of the lucky ones, headache, numb lips, etc, a lot of her friends were really poorly and puking and worse.

she was shakin coughin a bit when i picked her up and complaining of headache the doctor checked her over at the school, i've made her shower and get out of the clothes she was wearing, seems ok but i'm keepin an eye.

apparently two of the parents were pepper sprayed when they forced their way into the school, it had been announced on the radio there was a chemical leak so there'd been a lot of parents up there trying to get to their kids.

WHY did this child have it? After the news today in Ohio I guess be glad it wasn't a gun. You don't have that problem there though, do you?

no idea why he had it, hopefully they'll be asking his parents where he got the stuff.

i think they said something on the news about the gun law so i'm not sure if it comes under same laws as guns.

If you went to the school I went to as a kid, you needed pepper spray, a 9mm and a few hand grenades just to make it in the front door! But, seriously. I know how to cure the little bastard of his pepper spray fetish: Strap is goofy ass down to a table and spray a whole can in his face. He'll never want to see the stuff again. I've been hit with pepper spray before. It's not pleasant.

Was the kid's last name Haszard, by any chance?

Seriously, what are the parents thinking by not putting that out of their children's hands? I am glad that your child is okay.

if they charged the parents for the services...air ambulance(helicopters), ambulances/paramedics,fire engines, firemen, police, doctors etc, the parents would probably ensure the kid doesnt get near anything stronger than a deoderant stick in future.

in reality he'll probably get off with a caution and be back at school after the weekend.

i gave littlun a paracetemol and antihistermine when she got in, she then worked her way through a tin of rice pudding, chicken noodles, two bowls of homemade popcorn and a kebab, was still complaining of headache when she went to bed, so i gave her another paracetemol. she got upset when i said i'd keep her home from school tomoz and insists on going, so i'm pretty sure she's ok. i just hope the other kids who copped the bigger doses and had to go to hospital for treatment dont have any lasting damage.

i vented my spleen in an email to ofsted the supposed school watchdog and standards pepes (they've only just done an inspection and not yet updated their report on the school), maybe now theres been an incident of accute embarrassment proportions the headmisstress might start dealing with the bullying problems.

Staff waited hour before calling 999

Kentish Express Thursday 22 May 2008

    by Sarah Marshall

SENIOR staff at Christ Church School, Ashford, waited over an hour before calling the emergency services when a pepper spray was let off in a stairwell earlier this year.

The first pupil went to the first aid room suffering from the effects of pepper spray at 11.15am on February 7, but an ambulance was not called by head teacher Catherine Barber and her management team until more than an hour later - at 12.18pm.

During that hour more children came forward suffering from breathlessness, sickness sore eyes and coughing.

Twenty-two children were later taken to the William Harvey Hospital and others were treated at the school, which borders Stanhope and Kingsnorth. In total, 60 pupils received medical attention.

Pepper spray canisters are illegal in the UK and contain an ingredient of fine particles which irritate the skin. The more often the particles are touched or rubbed, the greater the irritation. Medical advice says it is therefore vital to deal with pepper spray effects quickly.

    * A 12-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing a prohibited weapon following the incident. He has not been charged with any offence but police say their investigation is still ongoing.
