The Taliban and Circuit Overseers

  Why do men in the Taliban fight on, expecting defeat?

  Easy answer. They have no where else to go. They have no alternative
  but fight on and die for their cause.

  Why do Circuit Overseers, prominent Bethelites and District Overseers
  continue in their posts:

  even though they know the Watchtower is lying about blood, the UN,
  child molesting and dozens of other topics?

  even though they see the rot, the declining meeting attendance,
  the corruption of elders, and the non-responsiveness of a half-
  senile leadership?

  Same as the Taliban
  They have no where else to go.
  It takes a lot of courage to quit and try to find
  a place to live and a job when you're 40, 50, 60 years old.

  So they stifle their conscience
  and repeat whatever propaganda is shoved into their mouths.

  And they may fight to the death,
  just like their brothers in doom,

  I wonder about this often; in the case of Bethelites, the lifers at least have their innumerable perks to assuage the misgiving that gnaw at their innards. I really wonder about the people the road who live out of a suitcase, dragging around a frustrated, menopausal wife whose hope of enjoying a ``normal'' family life she shelved for what she was certain would be ``just a few more years.'' Do they ever bolt out of bed in a cold sweat as reality intrudes on their sleep during the wee small hours? How many of this group still really buy into the party line? Tantalizing questions these.

  Room215's comment caused me to reflect on the few times that I've lurked on "real" JW discussion boards. A major topic of conversation seems to be "I can't wait 'til Armageddon so I can dump my loser husband."

  A guy on the radio once offered this: "take a look at your spouse. That's the best you could do in the 'spouse marketplace.'"

  Well, actually, I think they expect to win. At the very least they expect to go to heaven where they can shag all the virgins they want!
