It's the Magellan Roadmate one. My husband got it. The company is only open during business hours... Wondering if there's a way to plug in the p/n number and find out where it is when somebody goes to use it...

I'm afraid not. GPS is one way-from the satellite down to the reciever. The reciever does not transmit.

This really pisses me off.
You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to get the zoombak which is a transmitter/receiver and superglue the damn thing to the GPS and the next time it gets stolen I'm gonna friggin track down the damn person who stole it and deal with them myself...

Even if YOU don't know where is - at least IT knows where it is. That's something.

Each unit has a unique ID, but unfortunately it receives only and does not transmit back in a way it can be tracked.
I have handheld Garmins and I put my name in the startup screen on the chance that if it gets "misplaced" someone could return it to me.
Now, if I can find another 50 geocaches, then my total would be 500. -

Some models like my Garmin has a lock/security feature, which prevents the unit from performing any functions until you enter a user-defined four-digit PIN or take it to a predetermined location for it to come on. Next one you get make sure you have some sort of features like that. Sorry to hear about yours getting stolen. Good news is that they are coming down in price.
