Since the topic I've done a bit of research with regards to adoption agencies in south africa. Very sad to report that there aren't THAT many. The amount of orphans, a staggering 2.5 million, only 2 600 children were adopted last year!!!! The highest % is black children, a sad thing about this is that adoption agencies look to place children within the same race - sad because not many black families can afford to take on extra children and it's rare that inter-racial adoptions take place (not a lack of families wanting to adopt though) They seem to rather "foster out" these children.
Anotehr thing I found in my research was that of the adoption agencies, a lot are christian based and stipulate that you have to be a member of a Christian Church and live in accordance with biblical principles - they then give a list of what they value above certain things. Again I understand the need for a good home for the child, but surely being a christian or not shouldn't come into it? If I can supply a loving home for the child, love it, look after it financially and emotionally, provide education for the child.. that should be enough??
I shall keep looking and searching my heart - I have a bit of time to think on this, but it's good to be as prepared as I can (that is if I"m going to adopt)
