Since the topic I've done a bit of research with regards to adoption agencies in south africa. Very sad to report that there aren't THAT many. The amount of orphans, a staggering 2.5 million, only 2 600 children were adopted last year!!!! The highest % is black children, a sad thing about this is that adoption agencies look to place children within the same race - sad because not many black families can afford to take on extra children and it's rare that inter-racial adoptions take place (not a lack of families wanting to adopt though) They seem to rather "foster out" these children.

Anotehr thing I found in my research was that of the adoption agencies, a lot are christian based and stipulate that you have to be a member of a Christian Church and live in accordance with biblical principles - they then give a list of what they value above certain things. Again I understand the need for a good home for the child, but surely being a christian or not shouldn't come into it? If I can supply a loving home for the child, love it, look after it financially and emotionally, provide education for the child.. that should be enough??

I shall keep looking and searching my heart - I have a bit of time to think on this, but it's good to be as prepared as I can (that is if I"m going to adopt)

Can you look into foreign adoptions? There is a lot to be frustrated about when it comes to adoption. Even in the US, it is a subject causing lots of tears to those involved. I know it must be hard -- I've seen what a lot of people have been through in the adoption process.

    Loubelle, sad stats on adoption.

If I were you I'd take up Kurtbethel on his offer.

I have had a hand in raising 7 kids. Borrow some for a while before you make up your mind about this.

The stress (even with 2 parents) is hard enough... I did it alone with a kid who was self sufficient and that was hard enough

Is it worth it? Yes... but if your looking for your kids to say thank you it may be over your gravesite.

BFD - I may just have too - we'd have uber cute kiddies .

Renee - I haven't looked into the international adoption too deeply - but they seem to be very strict.

hillbilly - that is remarkable - I may do a bit of fostering first, see how I handle / measure up.

    No interracial adoptions?

    That is preposterous!

I know of a couple (white) who have adopted two little black children. I know that adoption agencies prefer to place children with adults of similar culture, but interracial adoptions do happen. Don't take no for an answer Loubelle.

Mrs Smith & Burn - yes they do happen but it's very very rare - I did mention that. Usually more affluent families.
