I once had an elder point out that my greatest, and even my families flaw was that of being self-satisfied !

At that time (out of respect for headship) I made no rebuttal. However I did think to myself , is this part of

that great guilt trip , don't think being happy is enough...you must give more until it hurts or you feel miserable

about your lot in life ! (all for Jah of course )

He seen my family as self-satisfied..I seen a happy, relax, contented family who was not giving him judicial headaches!

Contentment is against the JW religion.

Do I feel I could spend my time more wisely and get more accomplished? Yes. Do I beat myself up when I spend time relaxing and reading JWD instead of reading theology books and feeding the poor? No. There has to be some joy and some slack time in life. Don't feel much guilt about anything post-WTS.

The only alternative to being self-satisfied is being self-misable. I guess the elder wanted you to be just like him.

There is nothing wrong with being self satisfied. However, if someone is prideful of destroying value and ruining lives, that is a major fault. And I don't care who it is--I happily bash Almighty God Himself for creating needless obstacles in my life and snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory where there isn't a damn thing I can do to prevent it.

Self satisfaction for having done something good, on the other hand, is a major virtue.

Sounds like a revealing comment by the elder as to his own problems. He just plain didn't like you and your family, he was a sourpuss who was probably very dissatisfied with his own life.

Thanks for all a comments ,I think your conclusions pretty more match mine, that contentment beats

misery; So that this elder was a sour puss, having some sort if envy because of the heavy burden place

upon him by the WTS. It reminds me of a TV program I saw, where people believe they must display physical

    suffering to please God.

People love to project their misery on others....like I'm not happy, I'm stressed so who shouldn't you be too damn it! Why aren't you doing more, WHY?

CALIBER- I agree that this elder was projecting his own misery on you. You know- the old expression ; " Misery loves company ! " LOL! But being self- satisfied is a real virtue and it brings peace of mind and contentment to our families and our lives. Such a simple concept- probably why witness elders don't understand it
