A clue to what Jesus was claiming can be deduced by the reaction of Pharisees (lawyers) of Judaism to Jesus' statement about being "one" with the Father.
The Pharisees deduced he was claiming to BE God himself! They decided he needed to be stoned to death for blasphemy.
