In the congregation. Why do so many of those in authority go so badly wrong? Like, really badly wrong. A group of overgrown schoolchildren competing with each other & alienating the congregation from themselves. Feel free to cite experiences.

It seemed like some of the elders in my hall were constantly jockying for position. There were also some who were well intentioned, and it didn't take long for them to burn out.

When it comes to giving men authority, you need to ask, what real qualifications do they have in the first place.
Most are uneducated, and all you really need to do to become an elder is to stay out of trouble and stay in the good books with the other elders.
As far as doing Good is concerned, you need to ask yourself, how many really are God fearing? Do they really believe that God will one day examine what they’ve done or do they believe that God approves of whatever they do just because they are elders?
The more you study the Pharisees the more you can see how an Elder thinks.

When it comes to giving men authority, you need to ask, what real qualifications do they have in the first place.
Definetely what I was thinking. What qualities do they have that can take on that role.
I have found that Elders who take control in their own lives, including their relationships, tend to not control other people. But when there is an Elder whose wife clearly lays down the law in the household, that Elder will abuse his authority over others in the congrgation.
