Do you think there is any chance the WTS will follow suit?

    Yea, when pigs fly....

hmm, do I think the WTS would apologize?
    ummmm.....thinking.....
    no.
They are utterly devoid of humility, love, honor and compassion-or any of the other marks Jesus left for people to seek Him. Unless they would stand to profit from it in some way (and then, it would only be by FORCE) would they even half way apologize for the damage they have done to people. They in no way reflect ANY of the teachings or precepts taught by Jesus. Not one.

    Howdy Bridgette,

I think that's a True Statement for any religion, corporation, organization which has been/will be paying millions of dollars out in law suits - and they know more will be coming.

How to start turning Public Opinion? Pay publicly, pay secretly, apologize, play up to the victims, start making policy changes - then implement the actual changing of the workings of the organization.

Look at Mazda - paid big time. Then changes were made. Catholic pope's no different - nor jw's. When it cost them enough money, they'll make some short of lame shift at apologizing, and implementing changes. That's why people sue.

The pontiff tucked his one-paragraph mea culpa into a 120-page message to Catholics in Oceania on a wide range of issues raised by their bishops in 1998.
So, the issues (several of them dealing with priests & missionaries raping nuns and children) were raised in 1998 - took 120 pages to answer ------- and a "one-paragraph mea culpa" *tucked* in there is considered adequate? Naaaaaaaaaaaa, sounds a lot more like the WTBTS.

Just wondering... Has the pope ever had sex? Kind of ironic that, if he didn't and he has to apoligize for others doing it, especially in kinky ways.

Oh well life is like that.

Somehow I don't think the pope was losing much money here. I think the apology was sincere. Actually, the Vatican itself has been operating in the black for the last several years, which is something new in this century.

    Saint,
As to whether or not the pope has ever had sex, well, that's his business. He apologizes because he's the guy in charge of the organization. A good leader accepts some responsibility for what goes on in his organization even if he isn't guilty himself.

    Howdy yeru,

I agree. An apology usually pays off, one way or another - particularily if there is massive evidence of rapings.

Actually, the Vatican itself has been operating in the black for the last several years, which is something new in this century.
That's not the entire issue - the WTBTS is operating in the black also. The Catholic Church - by the 120-page response from the Pope, has many issues, including nuns being raped by their own priests and missionaries, let alone the age old problem of priests (most specifically) raping their school children/alter boys - even in the vestibule while preparing to say Mass. These are definitely not closed issues within the Catholic church. It is still happening as we speak, and the Pope said they were continuing to investigate.

I have read that the Catholic church (within the last decade) was denied insurance coverage for such things as raping children - because the insurance companies didn't consider them a decent risk any longer. It would do the Catholic church well to start changing Public Relations views towards them - in a very humble way. As with any organization, that usually translates to money in their pocket.

Look at the apology that the Red Cross gave within the last couple of weeks to the millions donated to them - it worked, and they kept the donations. All just a mix up - but it translates to money in their pocket - to be now used as was intended by the donator.

I was raised a Catholic for 18 years. I think the track record of the Catholic church of payoffs, shuffling raping priests to new, unsuspecting parishes, lawsuits demanding silence of victims, etc., is grossly indecent, if not openly dispicable. A one paragraph apology, imho, just doesn't hack it - for the Catholic church or for any other organization which speaks for God and then rapes their own innocent children in droves.

But as for the Pope being sincere, yeah, he could be, particularily to a believing Catholic. I suppose if the Governing Body tucked a one-paragraph apology in a 120 page book that the average jw isn't even going to see, it could be construed as sincere too, particularily to a believing jw.

Not much good, but perhaps sincere.

I think the point here is, that public pressure and adherants and ex-adherants to the catholic faith, shining light on dirty little secrets (and suing the shit out of a HUGE organization--cath church) produced results. I think a public apology is extremely important and cathartic--I speak from experience--even if it has to be most painfully extracted. I've never been a Catholic, much less an abused Catholic, but I have been an abused Jehovah's Witness. I see hope, when I look at how the Catholic church has been brought to the floor by a few little people. I also see it as a way for everybody to evolve and heal and find forgiveness--especially the perps. Public apologies are in order from the WTS, as well as massive reparations.
Then healing can begin. Then, they can possibly repair their relationship with their god, who calls them to justice for the damage done to children and innocent lives.
    for Laree--I remember you,
    Bridgette
