On this wonderful weekend, I just wonder how many Jehovah's Witnesses had a "Family Dinner" instead of Thanksgiving. I know when I belonged to Dubdom, many familys would get together for a "Family Dinner", but don't dare call it Thanksgiving. Never mind the food was the same, turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, grape juice or wine, and pumpkin pie. How strange it is to just substitute one word for another and it becomes something you can do. The only excuse given about why to have a "Family Dinner", was trukey was cheeper now, so it makes sence to have it. Huh?

I've always found it amusing how skittish JWs are in calling a spade a spade when it comes to the names of the holidays. For instance, one of the local elderberries made an announcement that there would be field service ``on, er, you know.. that worldly holiday next Thursday.'' Ditto Xmas, Easter, etc. As I pointed out in other, related threads, the dictum banning feasting on Turkey Day is one of the most disregarded of all by the friends.
I have heard lots of ways of getting around it. The best one was not to serve cranberry sauce because it was not Thanksgiving it cranberries were not served!
The second best one is that we were going to eat dinner anyway, so we just decided to have turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, etc., for this particular dinner!
I have to join the ranks of all the other 3rd generation j-dubs who gathered at gramma's on Thanksgiving for a "family dinner" w/ cranberry sauce because "turkey was cheaper then"...
hey jayhawk...curious...what's with that homepage at the bottom of your post?...somehow it doesn't seem to coordinate with your Rutherford quote...
I guess that at the JW "family dinner" someone still gave thanks in prayer.
"Heavenly father, we thank you for this occasion to gather as a family...and we thank you for the faithful slave for teaching us not to celebrate Thanksgiving which thankfully we are not doing, thank you. Amen. Pass the turkey please"

My mom NEVER had turkey on Thanksgiving. She didn't want anyone (most of all US... her kids) to get the impression that we were celebrating that "worldly" holiday.
I guess our family missed out on even the superficial aspects. Oh well... I'm making up for it now.
Wytchwomyn, First welcome! To answer your question, I received hate mail from these two loving individuals. So in my own small effort to expose these people for who they are, I posted one person's home page and the other's email address. I changed my signature, so how is this?
