Seven years later, I can still recall my dismay at finding out the NWT is not all it's purported to be.
I read both Byington's review and that of the Greek professor from Northwestern Theological Seminary (his name escapes me at the moment), and I was totally floored!
The WT is deluding itself in thinking that they have God's blessings.

Thanks, Jamie.
For me, Byington's comments re the translation of charis cut to the heart of so much that is wrong with the Witness religion. The shift of emphasis from God's grace to man's undeservedness is echoed in the shift of emphasis from God to the Organization. The constant reminder of man's undeservedness is then used to prod the flock into doing more so as to be deserving.
The wonder and beauty of God's grace are completely bypassed in favor of doctrine calculated to keep the Organization afloat.

You know, that crashing of the Jehovah name all over (after the historical fact) always struck me a little like the guy who tried to "steady the ark" when they were crossing the river. Presumptuous in the extreme, I think.
It would sort of seem obvious that if Jehovah wanted help with this, he could have seen to it himself, long before, no?
